The 32X was a console peripheral for the Genesis that allowed the system to take advantage of additional processing power to provide access to 32-bit quality graphics and sound. It was released in late 1994 in America as a stop-gap for the forthcoming release of the Saturn console in 1995 (originally intended for September of that year, but was moved earlier to May to beat the potential sales of Sony's PlayStation). A combined console version of the 32X and Genesis/Mega Drive, codenamed "Neptune", was planned, but never released.
