Plot[ | ]

The story takes place years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum, during Batman's second year as a vigilante. With his loyal butler Alfred as his only ally, Batman treats criminals merciless, whether they are street thugs or part of Gotham City's corrupt police force. With inconsistent witness testimonies and a lack of solid evidence, Batman's existence is shrouded in mystery to the public eye.

On Christmas Eve, Batman learns of a jailbreak at Blackgate Penitentiary perpetuated by crime lord Black Mask, who has Police Commissioner Loeb captive. Traveling to the prison, Batman is too late to stop Black Mask from executing Loeb, and is forced to chase after. While Black Mask escapes the prison, Batman is left to fight his hired assassin, a massive crocodilian man nicknamed "Killer Croc". After defeating and interrogating Croc, Batman returns to the Batcave, and confirms that Black Mask has hired eight assassins (including Killer Croc) to kill him, with a $50,000,000 bounty placed on his head. Fearing the assassins will target civilians to draw him out, Batman begins hunting Black Mask.

Batman starts by searching for the Penguin, knowing that the crime lord was been tracking Black Mask.
