Birdo is a strange, Yoshi-like creature that first appeared in Doki Doki Panic (Super Mario Bros. 2). According to the instruction manual, one is actually a boy that likes to be called Birdetta. It is rumored that the Birdo called Birdette is the current Birdo appearing in Mario games. Birdo was always known as Catherine in Japan. Instead of being a boy who liked to be called "Birdetta", she was a girl who would rather be called "Cathy". Birdo is in love with Mario's Yoshi and Yoshi loves Birdo back because he does not know that Birdo is a he.
