It's a testament to the diversity of gaming that we actually have several options available when it comes to surgery games. While the anime-styled Trauma Center offers a serious, bizarre, and dramatic spin on the pressure of the ER room, Surgeon Simulator 2013 goes the complete opposite direction. As some sort of back alley sawbones named Nigel Burke, you ineptly attempt to perform surgical procedures with a variety of tools at your disposal, most of which are not designed for such delicate work. Add to that the game's intentionally less than precise controls, and you've got a wrongful death lawsuit waiting to happen!

Iceland, Reykjavik, Fanfest 2013
Fanfest in Reykjavik enjoys an almost legendary reputation, not only for people that play Eve Online, send scanners through out galaxies and have starting playing Dust 514, a free-to-play title for the PS3.

The descent upon this volcanic island by plane, already gives a good impression, how the designers of the game, which is produced by CCP in Iceland, got their inspiration for the graphics. The venue hall Harpa, whose facade was inspired by facettes on icebergs and provides stunning views of the surroundiing landscape, became home to almost 2000 players and fans, who made it over to this barren rock in the northern atlantic. The Harpa housed the fans now for a second time, but the Fanfest celebrated its tenth … -
As far as DLC is concerned, map packs, new characters, and new weapons are all well and fine, but we’re partial to DLC that re-envisions games as gonzo neon 80’s action films filled to the brim with one liners and lasers. Which is why we’re excited to play the new Far Cry 3 stand-alone expansion, Blood Dragon. Replacing the game’s relatively serious tone with a completely goofball revamp dedicated to the cheeseball VHS action heroes of yore, it’s the kind of no-holds-barred approach we love to see from DLC content.
On April 30th, from 2PM PST to 3PM PST, Doug and myself will be shooting dragons with lasers and spouting one liners, check it out!

The Next Xbox and the PlayStation 4 are on the horizon and with new consoles, come new games. The Playstation 4 Press Conference earlier in the year showcased a few launch titles for the upcoming console. New games from the inFAMOUS and Killzone series, along with a new ideas, were shown. The quality of a console's launch titles can really determine the initial sales. A new, must-play game or new installments of popular series can help convince gamers to grab the console early. How important do you feel launch titles are to a console's long term success?
Let's take a look at some past launch title lineups, and then look at what we know for the next generation. Did the launch lineups of these consoles determine their shorterm/longterm success? …

As the current generation of systems slowly draws to a close, we’re left to reflect and look back at the legacy of the PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo’s Wii. Everyone will have a different opinion about which system was the best of this generation, but the question becomes even more interesting when you compare these consoles to every other generation of gaming as well. While number crunching is certainly one way to pick a favorite, we’re a little more interested in which system you personally consider the best of all time. Go back as far as you like, Atari 2600? Sony PlayStation 2? FM Towns Marty? Some factors to consider: innovation, quality of the game library, reliability, or heck, even just your pure nostalgia. We’d love to get opinions fr…

“Working memory of shooter game players more flexible”
The working memory of people who frequently play first-person shooters or action games, is more flexible than that of people who do not play these types of games. Avid players are able to better adapt to auditory and visual information he / she receives, states Dr. Lorenza Colzato.
She studied this on behalf of the University of Leiden. A total of 52 subjects divided into two groups of gamers and non-gamers, with an average age of 23 years, with an IQ that was similar for both groups.
The two groups were given two different tasks. On display were random letters shown and players had to tell if the third letter was the same as the first, fourth the same as the second, and so on. "We saw in…

With details about the Durango allegedly right around the corner, there are still a few questions left about the PlayStation 4 we’d like to see answered. While Sony rightly put the focus of their system’s debut on its software and games as opposed to the hardware (controller excepted), we still want to know what it looks like. After all, we’re gonna have to look at that box next to our TVs for at least the next 5 years. There's always a chance that the actual unit might be as radical looking as the mockup above, and Sony is holding back to blow our minds, but given their history of fairly conservative looking systems, we wouldn't bet on it. Let's also not forget that the system’s x86 architecture, means there's no real limit to what kind of…

While Sony has remained mum on the future of PSN and whether or not paid subscriptions (outside of PlayStation Plus) will be a part of it, everyone seems confident Microsoft will maintain their paid Xbox LIVE Gold service, or some variant of it, for their next-gen console. In a market where free basic online multiplayer is expected on PC and PS3, how valid is the LIVE business model in 2013? PlayStation Plus offers subscribers free games every month, while Steam periodically frequently sells titles at deep discounts. Meanwhile, LIVE offers little more than access to features that are routinely free on every other platform. Even more concerning, with the increasing presence of consoles as streaming media boxes, will a Gold LIVE account stil…

Few things that have failed to resonate with the core gaming crowd harder than Microsoft’s Kinect. Sold as the future of game controls, most gamers saw it as a “me too” reaction to the Wii’s runaway success with selling motion controls to a wider audience. Gamers were equally let down by its generally abysmal game library, which features some of the lowest ranked games on the system. Add to that its mediocre functionality, and the massive amount of room real estate required to even get it to work, and it seems bizarre that Microsoft would still pitch Kinect 2.0 as one of the major selling points of their next-gen console.

Those who own an Xbox 360 are aware that the console functions much more than a simple gaming console. Microsoft relied on the use of non-gaming applications to also push sales of the console. Immensely popular applications like Netflix, HBO GO, and ESPN allows for easy streaming of video clips and television shows/movies. Music channels such as Last.fm and Zune allow for users to play music. Microsoft created official apps for Twitter and Facebook as well, allowing players to easily log into their social media accounts and update them from console.

To put it bluntly shared-world shooters are essentially the World of Warcraft of the console industry, allowing players to enter online servers and share their usual shooter campaign experience with friends or strangers from across the world on large online maps. No more so is this World of Warcraftesque gaming experience seen than in Destiny, where players are able to join parties to attend raids. With shooter genres and MMO genres accounting for vast majority of the senior gaming market, it seems only logical to take the advantages and best features of both genres and combine them; thus resulting in shared-world shooters.
So what does this mean for shooters? Fear not, your run-of the mill offline linear campaign shooters which feature onl…

Hola Wikians!
Remember April 9th, 2013 my friends, for it marks the birth of a new segment called "Wikia Twitch Tuesdays"! As You might imagine, this does not mean we'll be jerking around on the floor and spazzing out weekly, but instead means we'll be streaming gameplay from a recently released title while yammering into a mic.
Today's game is the just-released Guacamelee!, a downloadable title for The PS3 and Vita that blends Metroidvania style gameplay with a colorful, playful, take on Mexican folklore. It's also got some Beat em Up combat and combo elements in there because, hey, a luchadore needs those if he wants to be taken seriously.
We've finished recording our gameplay and you can view the footage in it's entirety below!

Recently, as many already know, Adam Orth made a complete Orth of himself and Microsoft with his "deal with it" Tweet, saying that electronics are completely useless unless they have an Internet connection. I appreciate people like Orthy, I really do; comedians are under-appreciated, I think.Unfortunately, he wasn't kidding. Well, he claims he that some of his comments were just "joking", but I suspect that he's just backpedaling. Ironically, it was a BioWare employee who called him out on his ridiculous ranting. If BioWare is telling you your Tweets are stupid, something is seriously wrong. Apparently, according to Orth, there's no point in playing video games if you don't have an Internet connection. He then went on to cite some of the p…

Downloadable content is sort of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, we get things like the Shivering Isles. On the other hand, we also get stuck with things like Horse Armour. Whilst it can be used as a means to add even more content to a complete experience, there is a dark side to DLC. There are those who would corrupt it and exploit this just to make a quick buck, at the cost of quality.Let's use Dead Space 3 as an example. There is no hint of originality to its add-on content. I don't mean it's artistically bankrupt; it just completely lacks anything of substance to help differentiate it from the core experience. I'm fine with costume packs and such, so long as they're priced properly. However, every single downloadable weapon and su…

Are Games to Blame? With the increasing grasp of the gaming industry over public leisure time at a global scale and the apparent increase in violence in society, it can be easy for the media to form the hypothesis that the two parameters are directly correlated. Gaming has persistently been subject to blame for anti-social and violent behavior in youths, and has even been targeted on regular occasions by the American National Rifle Association as the cause for gun orientated killing sprees. However, how much of this is truth based in imperial evidence, and how much is the media and organisations using gaming as a scapegoat?
Despite persistent criticism from experts which claim that no good evidence has been seen which links video games to vi…

Warren Spector, the legendary game designer of videogames such as System Shock, Deus Ex, and Epic Mickey preformed a talk at GDC 2013, comparing the video game medium to other media forms. He asked the question, what can be learned from other narrative media? And what we can, can't, and shouldn't borrow from them.
We can tell stories because we combine other media characteristics. No media survived without change, evolving past its roots. It's become Transmedia. Is that the only niche feature we have to offer?
Movies + interactivity = Wallking Dead, Heavy Rain. Even more than these. What we need to understand how other media make meeting and adopt conventions for us, know about them to mold them into our own approach.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is the first expansion for Starcraft II. The expansion includes additional units, as well as mulitplayer changes over Wings of Liberty. The campaign focuses mostly on the Zerg race and spans 27 missions. We were able to sit down with David Kim, one of Blizzard's mulitplayer developers on Heart of the Swarm and ask him YOUR questions!
Because most of the new changes are factored into the new units of the expansion, we are not planning on making those changes in Wings of Liberty. Wings has been balanced for about two and a half years, so we feel it’s in a good state right now. Introducing major changes, like for example, the Hydralisk to have a speed upgrade at tier two, is a huge change to the unit and we did…

Characters in video games are changing. In fact, characters in fiction are changing, to provide more multi-faceted human beings with their own personalities, flaws, strengths and weaknesses. While some are content to simply play as a mute, faceless errand boy, or an unbelievable power fantasy, I'd like something more. I want real people with emotions that I can relate to.
All too often games ask us to slip into the shoes of some overpowered protagonist. You know the type. The unstoppable badass who wins every fight, is always in the right, and gets the girl every time. In other words, a power fantasy.
These types of characters are typically infallible, in one way or the other. Instead of trying to find ourselves in these characters, we escap…

Hello there Gamers!
As you might have noticed, game portals have been slowly seeing a re-work that should simplify their look, increase their ease of use, and put a spotlight on some new or otherwise awesome wikis.
To that end, we now have Blog lists for each genre. If you are interested in writing a thought piece on your favorite shooters or a news blast about some upcoming Action-Adventure games, just categorize it with the same Bloglist Header title you find on the relevant portal.
For example, since this blog post pertains to Massively Multiplayer games, I will categorize it with "MMO Blogs", the same name that appears on the MMO Portal. Hopefully this helps facilitate and encourage more blogs on a variety of topics.
