Poochy is a friendly dog that appears in the Mario series of games. Poochy has the unusual ability to be impervious to lava. He helps Yoshi pass certain obstacles like aforementioned lava by allowing Yoshi to ride him.
He first appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and is a character in Tetris Attack.
