Castlevania 64 marked the first time the Castlevania series entered 3D. It would be followed shortly after by a sequel, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, and would not be tried again until well into the PlayStation 2 days. There are some that consider Castlevania 64 to be the "black sheep" of the series, while others hold a higher opinion of the game.

At the start of the game the player is allowed to choose one of the two protagonists to play as: Reinhardt Schneider, a descendant of the Belmont clan that wields the Vampire Killer whip, or Carrie Fernandez, a young girl with magical powers and a descendant of Sypha Belenades. The player then proceeds through the game, finding out more about their character and what exactly has brought them to the castle.

Many found the main problem to be with the camera, which sometimes go crazy. The game is much more linear compared to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. However, it does feature some impressive boss battles and visuals.
