The title screen for Clock Tower for the Super Famicom

Part of the Clock Tower Series. Released originally for the Super Famicom, after the great success of its sequel in Japan, the original was remade for the Playstation, and later the black and white Wonder Swan. It was unique for a few reasons.

  • Escape horror format; rather than readying a rifle or something of the like, the character is mostly defenseless. When being stalked by the lone enemy, they must find some object to use against them (which cannot otherwise be carried around) or some place to hide. Doing this will buy the player some exploration time.
  • A point and click interface, where the pointer would change when it hovered over something it could interact with, and without a choice of actions (the only specific action you could take with an object would be to use an item on it by choosing the item, then clicking what you wanted to use it with).
  • Multiple story paths; it's very easy to play the game twice in a row but have extreme variations in the story.
  • Multiple endings, each one unique and different

The story, set in Norway, is as follows:

Jennifer Simpson's mother died giving birth to her. Later, her father, a doctor, went to madk a housecall and never returned. As such, she was entered into the Granite Orphanage. When she became 14, she and three of her friends, Laura (also can be read as Rolla), Ann (also can be read as Anne), and Lotte, were wanted for adoption by a Mr. Simon Burroughs (also can be read as Barrows). A representative of Mr. Burroughs, Mary, came to pick them up, and out of respect, they refer to her as Ms. Mary. When they arrive at the house, Mary goes off to find Simon. Time passes, and Jennifer decides to search for her. She leaves the room, only to hear a horrible scream from where she came. She returns... the lights are out, and her friends are gone. And then she runs into the Scissorman, a horrible child carrying a giant pair of scissors!
