Deus Ex is a FPS RPG made by now defunct development house Ion Storm. The game was headed by Warren Spector and spawned one sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War, under the lead of Harvey Smith.
The game was made using a heavily modified Unreal Engine, and had very open ended gameplay. It was a sleeper hit, and went on to win several Game of the Year awards from various magazines and websites.
You play as UNATCO agent JC Denton, who is augmented with technology allowing him to be a more effective in battle than normal soldiers. You begin the game by trying to infiltrate and defeat various terrorist strong holds. The game is unique from other PC FPS games like Doom or Unreal because killing was not necessary, and even avoiding it can be rewarding. There are also various Metroid-style power-ups around the levels if players take the time to explore. Abilities such as hacking and swimming can be upgraded through out the game.
