[edit] Duke Nukem
The Duke Nukem series of PC game started with the self-titled first release. It was a DOS runtime side-scrolling shooter. The game was comprised of three episodes, with the first being available from the developer, then Apogee (later styled 3D Realms) as shareware. The basis for the game revolved around a thin character-versus-character plot between the protagonist Duke and the antagonist Doctor Proton.
[edit] Duke Nukem II
Duke Nukem II expands upon the original Duke Nukem mostly in graphics and audio. It retains the side-scrolling shoot'em-up style of gameplay but add depth in controls and game design. Duke is able to duck, manipulate ladders and bars, and use varying forms of key items including cloaking devices and hoverships. Game storyline develops more in DN2 than in it's precursor where Duke is abducted by aliens in order to carry out an evil plot, but Duke breaks free and over the course of the game causes havoc in his attempt to escape. The intro to the game describing this storyline offers comedic relief in that following the newscast of Duke's plight, coverage turns to 'a three-legged dog who saved a baby.'. Most of the comedy revolves around Duke's self-centered egotism, which include the latest set of items Duke collects for points up to and including Duke Nukem-branded memorabilia.
[edit] Duke Nukem 3D
Following the success of Apogee's Duke Nukem franchise, they re-branded themselves 3D Realms for their release of Duke Nukem 3D. Considered a flagship game by many considering since that titles debut, they largely did away with their 2D DOS and Win95 platformed games by Apogee and grew with the now burgeoning video game industry. Since then they have developed competing games like Max Payne.
