E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is a game released for the Atari 2600 and is based on the movie of the same name.
E.T. is widely recognized as one of worst games ever made. E.T., along with many other terrible Atari 2600 games released in late 1982 and 1983, caused the Video Game Crash of 1983. One of the best examples of the quality of a movie game, and was also the very first one.
Warner Bros., who owned Atari at the time forced the company to make a game based on the movie. Warner Bros. forced Atari to make 7 million copies of the game and that the game would be finished by Christmas, which gave Atari only six weeks to program the game.
The game sold about 1.5 million copies and many people wanted refunds for the game. With a warehouse full of unsold copies, Atari took the games, buried the games in a New Mexico landfill, steam rolled them and poured cement over.
The game is an Adventure game. The objective of the game is to find the three telephone pieces and phone home. One flaw in gameplay is that E.T. falls into the wells (pits) way to frequently and its hard to get out. The telephone pieces are located in the wells. You also have to avoid FBI agents and scientists.
