This is a second hand reporting from the Heisei Democracy blog.

The following is various ranking results from the 2007 July issue of Tech Gian, a Japanese bishoujo gaming magazine (full results available from the original blog post, where the blogger has scanned the relevant pages of the magazines):

Additionally, a total of 3 characters from Fate/stay night made top 15 favorite heroine (2nd, 3rd, 13th).
A total of 2 characters from ToHeart2 XRATED made top 15 favorite heroine (4th, 8th).
(notice how the second place has less than half the points than Sengoku Rance? XD)
(c)アリスソフト
Kenshin displaced Saber as the favorite heroine.

Considering Fate/stay night is an 2004 title, it showed how successful the title is (though the anime adaptation might have generated a second buzz for the game, further boosting its popularity on top of the merits of the original game itself).

Aside from Fate/stay night, Sengoku Rance clearly dominated the Bishoujo scene ever since December 15th, 2006. While the blog writer Shingo commented that "Alice Soft should see this as a signal to… make Rance 8 as soon as possible", Sengoku's super success is partially due to the sengoku theme (there was a sengoku-craze going on in Japan due to a certain TV show). Another part of its success was the gameplay genre -- Sengoku Rance's genre of gameplay is a cross between the highly successful Kichikuou Rance, and the more modern "Dai-" series of AliceSoft games (territory conquest SLG). Rance 8 is probably going to be an RPG. Not to say RPGs are bad, but they aren't as super successful and addictive as the territory conquest SLGs.

I have no doubt that Rance 8, when it's released, will be a best seller. But it won't achieve the spectacular success enjoyed by Sengoku Rance. Of course, one can argue that Alice Soft really should push R8 out of the door as soon as possible, while people still remember about Sengoku Rance and will by R8 just out of their love of S. Rance. Still, I'd hope Alice Soft not rushing things out of the door.

Personally, I'd like to see them come out with a very well made Toshin Toshi 3 that might come close to rivaling Toshin Toshi 2 ^^"

ps. Another thing of note is, Kenshin from Sengoku Rance is actually partially modeled from and a nod to Saber of Fate/stay night. So in a sense Saber is taking up the top two favorite heroine slots.

pps. Unconfirmed trivia: Once upon a time, Tech Gian had a ranking to let the readers vote for their favorite H-game character. For a year, Rance held the first place. Then Tech Gian changed the ranking to "your favorite H-game heroine".
