Mario is to Wario as Luigi is to ________.
The Man
If you guessed Waluigi you win! What did you win exactly? Well, none other than the evil version of the lesser known brother of the Mario series.
Camelot created this wild and crazy dude because, really, who else was gonna play on Wario's team in Mario Tennis. This warped version of the green brother stuck around for other Mario sports and party titles. It is unclear what the relationship is between Wario and Waluigi (whether or not they are brothers, cousins, or just merely have a shared hate for the Bros. Mario, not the type of relationship you were thinking of you sicko).
The Name
Waluigi's name makes sense, I assure you. In fact, you can follow this recipe to create your very own Waluigi! Simply take one cup Japanese (in this case the word "warui", meaning "bad" or "evil"), one cup pre-existing character (Luigi), mix, and stir vigorously. Doesn't taste too good? Well then, move to Japan. You see in Japan L's and R's are used interchangeably, so Luigi would be pronounced "ruiji", and Waluigi, "waruiji". Tastes a bit better but still a little bland? Sorry nothing I can do for you there.
Also, Waluigi is an anagram of "igiwalu". This is the Japanese word for mean-spirited (usually spelled "ijiwaru").
The Controversy
Not many fans of the big N like Waluigi. Many bemoan the lack of originality in his clunky name. People also dislike him for the fact that he's pretty much a throw-away character, created for the sole purpose of having another character to play as in Mario games like Mario Party and Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.
