Dante is the main character of the Devil May Cry series. He is a half-demon, the spawn of Sparda and Eva (his human mother). He has one sibling (assuming Capcom doesn't go crazy and spawn a thousand more): Vergil. While Vergil embraced his demon half, Dante embraced his humanity, and currently fights demons via a sort of bounty-hunting service. This business has had two names: Devil May Cry, and Devil Never Cry.
He runs his Devil hunting business along with his partner Trish, a demon created by Mundus to look exactly like his mother. Dante also occasionally receives help from fellow devil hunter Lady.
If there is one thing that Dante is known for in his younger years (around the time of the prequel Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening), it is showing off. In a cutscene that has been taken too far by fans of the series, Dante actually engages in a large brawl with demons while keeping a slice of pizza unharmed in an act of showing off. He also rode a missile, shot by Lady.
Later on, one would see Dante losing a bit of his show-offy attitude, although he retained his cockiness.
His most well-known weapon is Rebellion/Force Edge, a large claymore-like weapon that is his starting weapon, and Ebony and Ivory, his twin handguns. Each game takes a unique route in bestowing more weapons upon him, with some going for the more showy route(DMC3's Nevan), or a more practical approach(DMC's Alastor). Either way, the man is literally armed to the teeth by the time he reaches the end of each game.
