Grand Theft Auto III is the first move into 3D for the Grand Theft Auto series providing a free-form game experience in the fictional Liberty City. Essentially focusing on a life of crime, stealing cars and shooting people while taking on various missions, this game marked the expected movement from the previous 2D games of this series, while staying impressively close to their format.
The game's improved graphics over its predecessors and apparent freedom of gameplay made this one of the PlayStation 2's highest selling killer apps - the series remains incredibly popular.
