Mario's games spread into different genres, like golf games.

The Mario Series, alternatively known as the Super Mario Series, is one of the most well-known series in the gaming industry, and will probably continue to be known for years to come. It stars Mario, along with his increasingly growing cast of characters, such as his taller, greener brother Luigi and the often useless Toad.

All Mario games date back to an arcade platformer, starring Jumpman. Since then, while Super Mario is still most known for jumping on Goomba's, Koopa's and other poor animals, he has expanded to all kinds of genres, most notably, the arcade sport genre. Besides that, the series has had an entry in puzzle games, racing games, and even some lesser known edutainment titles.

However, not all games in the Mario series feature Mario prominently. Examples of this are the various Wario Land games, the Gamecube launch title Luigi's Mansion or Yoshi's Story.

The Mario series is the best selling series of games ever, with over 150 million units sold since the NES.

Games in the series

This list is incomplete. You can also check the Mario series category. It should be noted that mere appearances of Mario & friends are not counted as being a Mario game, so you won't find Punch-Out!!, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or even Super Smash Bros. Melee in this list.

Characters in the Series

The Mario series has grown to cover a huge cast of characters, each being featured usually as players in the different arcade sport games like Mario Power Tennis. Below are characters and enemies that are unique to the Mario series.

Mario in Other Media

Being one of the oldest and most popular video game franchises around, Mario has naturally been featured in other mediums. It had 3 cartoon shows by DiC entertainment, the most popular of which being the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. There was even a weird, surreal, and poorly received movie, called Super Mario Bros. in 1993. It was the first movie to be based on a game, and started the trend of bad video game movies that continues to this day. There was also a little known anime movie "Super Mario Bros." released in 1988.
