Announcement

The Sony PlayStation 3 is a console officially unveiled at the 2005 Electronics Entertainment Expo, the PlayStation 3 is Sony's third home console. The console makes use of the much-touted Cell processor, Blu-Ray disc technology, a new graphics card from nVidia, and seven wireless controllers. It will support a new Eyetoy, carry a multitude of USB and memory card ports, and may include a hard drive. The machine will be able to output high-definition resolutions up to 1080p. The PlayStation 3 was launched November 11, 2006.

During E3 2006, it was revealed that the controller would resemble the Dual shock controller, though with gyroscopes to sense movement, more trigger-like shoulder buttons, and a lack of force feedback/rumble feature. When released, like the Xbox 360, it will have two versions. The complete, premiere version at $800 USD, and a basic version for $500 USD. The "basic" version has no memory card support and only a 20Gb Hard drive.

Updates

On January 24, 2007 Sony released a firmware update (version 1.5) for the PS3. This patch will automatically save the password when logging in, keytone in sound settings, and add a backup-data delete option. Due to complaints on forums and by gamers, Sony fixed the "jaggy" graphics problem on the PS3 by making it able to lower its resolution for PS2 games

On April 19, 2007 Sony released 1.70 firmware for its PlayStation 3 the update allows downloadable PSX titles on the console to be played and improves backward compatibility with PS2 peripherals. The firmware also adds the ability for players to transfer PlayStation 1 save data from the PSP to PS3.

Hardware

CPU

The PS3 is the first commercial hardware to use the Cell processor which was designed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM. The processor has 234 million transistors which is more than Intel's Duo Core Extreme which just breaks the 200 million mark. This means the PS3 is faster than the most powerful desktop computer processor since 2005. The PS3 also uses a 3.2-GHz PowerPC core equipped with 512 KB of L2 cache. The PowerPC core is a powerful processor which delegates tasks to eight processing units on the chip which increases efficiency.

Graphics Card

The PS3 contains an RSX graphics card which was designed by Sony and Nvidia. The RSX graphics card is based on Nvidia's GeoForce technology. The RSX graphics card contains 550-MHz, 300-million-transistor which is more transistors than the Xbox, GameCube, and PlayStation 2 combined.

Blu-ray optical disc drive

The Blu-Ray optical disc drive is a front-loading drive on the PS3. The disc drive has backwards compatibility which supports PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. Games will be distributed on Blu-Ray discs which can hold up to 50GB (Dual-Layered). The drive also supports CD-ROMs, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROMs, DVD+R, DVD-R, and SACDs.

. However, the model was changed to one similar to the Dual Shock 2 controller of the PS2 because of negative response from gamers. Sony later introduced the SIXAXIS controller which exhibits six degrees of freedom. The controller is also as lightweight as the Dual Shock 2, making the Xbox 360 controller look like a paperweight. The controls are the same as the old Dual Shock controller but the vibrating features have been removed and replaced with a motion sensor. The controller also uses wireless bluetooth technology and can be wired and charged with an USB cable.

Pricing

On Monday July 1, 2007 Sony dropped the price of the PS3 from $599 to $499 for the 50GB model. This model was later discontinued.
