Super Mario Bros. was where you could say Mario started. This was his first full platformer adventure. There were a total of eight worlds which were made up of four levels, which you would make Mario jump and run through to get to the end. There were various obstacles including well known enemies like the Koopa Troopas, Goombas and Piranha Plants, and large gaps which you had to find specific ways to jump over.

There were many secrets to find throughout the game including warp zones, secret 1-UP blocks and bonus areas. These were very well located in places you wouldn't expect, like in world 1-1, you can find the first secret 1-UP block located about 5 block spaces away from the last pipe just before the small drop.

This game usually lasts about 3 hours for complete gameplay (That's completing the game without the use of Warp Zones), but it is easily completable in 10 minutes with the warps.

There were only three power-ups in this game. The Super Mushroom, the Fire Flower and the Super Star. The mushroom is found in a power-up block when you are small Mario, the Fire Flower is found when you are Super Mario, and there is usually one star found in each level. If you were hit while being Super Mario or Fire Mario, you would return to Mini Mario. If you were hit by an enemy while being Mini Mario you would lose a life. If you had a Super Star, you can touch enemies as much as you like as they won't be able to hurt you.

The ending was probably the most memorable, since it is the main ending and storyline used for all the Mario games after this one:

1) Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach.
2) Mario must roam the Mushroom Kingdom and defeat Bowser for the last time (Which he so far has never done).
3) Mario saves Peach and gets a kiss.

Simple as that.
