Game Dev Tycoon is a 2013 business simulation video game by indie developer Greenheart Games. Game Dev Tycoon was originally released for online download on December 10, 2012, and later released onto Steam on August 292013 through Steam's Greenlight service.  The game is influenced by another game with similar gameplay, Game Dev Story, created by Kairosoft.

Gameplay

Game Dev Tycoon's gameplay is based around starting out as a one-man game development company in a garage in the early 1980s, with the option of choosing to develop games for either the PC or the Govodore 64 (a parody of the Commodore 64.  As the player creates more and more games that get high sales, they have the ability to create game engines, move into an office, hire more developers onto the company, and eventually create their own consoles, online game stores, and MMOs.  Different consoles are released over the course of the in-game years that are all parodies of actual consoles released during different points of time throughout the 1980s and 2010s, such as Ninvento's TES (a parody of the NES), Vena's Vena Gear (a parody of Sega's Game Gear), and the mBox 360 (a parody of the Xbox 360).  All consoles except for the PC (which simply evolves over time) will be discontinued as the game years pass.

Games are created by choosing a system to develop them on, mixing different game genres with each other, moving sliders that represent different aspects of development (like level design and sound), and lastly titling the games, where they are released to the public.  Certain genres are suitable for certain consoles, and certain aspects of development require more focus on for specific genres (for example, quests are an important aspect of RPGs, so time spent focused on them by using the sliders is important).  Over time, different options can be researched, like 3D graphics and sound improvements.  Bugs also appear during game development, but if the player holds off a bit on releasing their game, the bugs are fixed.
