When moving articles from the old site, put the tag Template:Moved to indicate that it's moved, unless you are an admin and can delete it.

The old version doesn't show up. --Evisruc 13:37, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

Yeah. And without that, we'd have to recreate EVERY article from scratch. PLEASE say it's just a bad link and we don't have to start over. --Kaosu Reido 17:06, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

We always have www.strategema.net if worse comes to worse, but that version is a few months old. --Evisruc 18:54, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

  • Nope. That points to this now... :(--AlphaTwo 19:48, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

W00t w00t. Link's fixed now. Time to get to work, everyone! --Kaosu Reido 20:00, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

HOLD IT!!! Achernar, can't you export the old pages into XML, and import it here?--AlphaTwo 20:20, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

Wait, what?--Achernar 20:44, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

  • While I was writing my bot (ironically down because list is not populated), I learned about Special:Export, which does one page (or sets) at a time. This might prove to be helpful, I dunno.--AlphaBot 20:50, 4 May 2006 (PDT)
  • What if we could write the bot to XML export everything over? Small test runs would be wise, but I suppose it's possible... --Achernar 22:59, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

And I fixed the mod_rewrite redirectors this evening to make sure that everyone got where they were supposed to when they went for either the old site or the new site.

All I'm doing to move old articles over is to cut and paste the wikicode. If there's an easier way to do this that DOESN'T involve mysqldumping, I'm all over it, since it would significantly cut down on the amount of work we'd have to do. It was dumping the mysql data that caused a lot of the problems before. The problem with images is that we can't just move the images; we have to do uploads because the database won't know they are there, otherwise.

Alpha, I'm looking into creating a python bot of my own as soon as I can get my Ubuntu box up and running this weekend. I've been dragging my feet on getting that client working, and I need to stop and just get it up.

I know this is a pain in the ass, but we needed to get a fresh start as soon as humanly possible, and I saw people getting bored with what was going on and frustrated with the Unicode issues.

I blame myself and my eagerness to be rid of VizaWeb. --Achernar 20:47, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

Beware of screwy characters when moving pages, I just omittied them and did a little rewording for the The_Codex_Gamicus:Vandalism page. I don't know what was there in the first place that was lost though. --Porphyria Plan 10:56, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

Import, Export, XML

I just experimented with Special: Import and Special: Export, but I dont think I did it right. When exporting, all I get is a bunch of code, so I just copied an XML looking URL and saved it. Tried to import it but I dont know what it did. Got somew eird lines. Is there some program I need for XML? I don't do a lot of this stuff. --Evisruc 21:29, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

Hmmm... I think Notepad works for XML. http://www.xmlcooktop.com/ Here's a free editor, but I know no true XML, so don't look at me. I'm all for a quick transfer, though. --Kaosu Reido 01:14, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

Order of transferring

Is it okay to just transfer pages on a whim, or should we be going in order? Like, I noticed Achernar starting with the years, should we go alphabetically? If we don't, do we run the risk of articles getting lost in the shuffle? --Evisruc 10:17, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

I just did userboxes. I wonder about order too. I think we could include a checklist like below, change or erase as seen fit, it's just a suggestion, might get long though. Listing a console only when all game pages have been moved could save space in the list below--Porphyria Plan 10:27, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

  • My order of attack is starting from my UserPages and look for awkward redlinks. --AlphaTwo 11:16, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

Deleting articles from the old wiki is the best way to know what's been moved and what hasn't. I simply hadn't done that when I started moving things a few nights ago. --Achernar 12:17, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

  • Good point. For those who don't have the rights, flag the file so that a sysop see that it needs deletion.--AlphaTwo 13:18, 5 May 2006 (PDT)
    • I made a template on the old version, {{Moved}}, so it doesn't get mixed up with the articles that are actually marked for deletion. So just keep checking Category: Moved on the old verison. --Evisruc 13:45, 5 May 2006 (PDT)
