Amiibos are a series of handheld character models that provide additional in-game material for the Wii U console, similar to the Skylanders series. The models are based off various Nintendo characters, and provide special in-game gameplay abilities for various Wii U video games. The material can be transferred from the Amiibos model to the console via a reading device located on the Wii U gamepad. Amiibos have already been confirmed for several popular Wii U titles such as Super Smash Bros., Mario Party 10 and Mario Kart 8. A Nintendo 3DS version of Amiibos are scheduled to release sometime in 2015.
