An adult video game is not necessarily easy to define. Is, say, Mortal Kombat an adult video game? Certainly it wasn't, and still isn't, meant for kids, though it's probable that few people have problems with teenagers playing it anymore. In other words, a 15-year-old playing Mortal Kombat is no longer shocking. Therefore, it would seem that violence is not a criterion.
Generally, "adult" used in this sense refers to sexual content, including nudity. It may seem strange, but most people would rather have their kid blow somebody's head off in a game rather than observe nudity or make love in a game. Therefore, this is roughly the definition we use, nonsensical as it seems.
