So, you're looking for a certain page on EG? Here's some information that you may find useful.

Contents

[edit] The Buttons

There are two buttons underneath the search form:

  1. Pressing "GO" or Enter on your keyboard will automatically take you to the article of that name, if such an article exists.
  2. Pressing "Search", however, will just give you a list of results, with the article you would have gone to at the top.

[edit] Ampersand (&)

Due to some limitations, where no one here currently has the solution to, we cannot use the Ampersand symbol (&) in titles. Therefore, instead of searching for "Mario & Luigi", use "Mario and Luigi" instead.

[edit] Capitalization

Searching is partially case sensitive. That means

Legend of zelda

is not the same as

Legend Of Zelda

However, we here at EG usually make sure these variations redirect to the same page, so that no matter what you type automatically brings you to what you likely intended.

[edit] Multiple Articles/Disambugation

So, what if a name can apply to multiple things? I mean, how many Ryu's are there in video gaming? That leads to what we call a disambiguation page - a page that will list all the names.

Note that disambiguation pages are only used on pages where the different options are equally important or relevant. If one option is way more relevant than the others, we may just link to that article, with a small link to a disambiguation at the top. For example, people who search for Bass are probably referring to the Mega Man series character - therefore Bass Armstrong of the Dead or Alive series is only mentioned at the top.

[edit] Can't find a page?

If you typed in a page and can't find it, there are some explanations:

  1. You mistyped it. Don't just look for spelling errors, look for capitalization, spelling, hyphens, anything.
  2. There's an Ampersand (&) in the title. See the above section.
  3. That article doesn't exist. Even if it's a really popular game that you think should have an article by now, sometimes it doesn't. Please, feel free to create it for us.

Wikis give you multiple methods to search the content.

Wikis using the Monaco (latest) skin have a search bar in the toolbar on the left hand side of the screen below the wiki logo.

There are three main methods of searching a wiki:

  • Visit Special:Search either:
    • Via clicking the search box arrow when the sidebar's search box is empty, or
    • Via a link.
  • Enter a term in the search box, then press return or click the search arrow. If any matching article names are found, you will be taken straight there. If not, you will be taken to Special:Search.
  • Use an Inputbox - see below.

Creating a search box

To add a search box to any article, just type:

<inputbox>
type=search
</inputbox>

It will produce this box:

See Help:Inputbox for more details.

Other ways to find pages

To browse pages on the wiki, you can view a list of all pages or browse by category. See Special:ImageList to search for images.

You can also use Google's "site search" to search all Wikia wikis.
