Hunt the Wumpus is a game created for computers that ran BASIC. It was eventually ported to other formats, including game systems.
The player moves around a 20-room catacomb arranged in the shape of a dodecahedron, each room connected by three tunnels, in search of the Wumpus whom he must slay. With each room he enters, he is given potential clues as to what any of the adjoining rooms may contain -- the Wumpus, a slime pit, or a bat. If the player enters the same room as the Wumpus or one that has a slime pit, he dies and the game is over. If he enters a room where a bat is, the bat will carry him into a random room where he might be in danger.
To slay the Wumpus, the player must fire an arrow into one of the adjoining rooms where he thinks the Wumpus might be. If the arrow enters the room where the Wumpus is, the Wumpus is slain and the game ends in victory. If the arrow enters a room where there is no Wumpus, the player simply loses an arrow (he starts off with five arrows, and if he uses up his last arrow, the game ends).
The game was followed by a sequel written by the same author in which several other catacomb arrangements, including player-created ones, can be selected.
