Mario, a stocky Italian plumber, is Nintendo's mascot and star of the long-running, fan-favorite, history making Mario series. Not only has Mario starred in many different genres from puzzle to racing, he has expanded into other mediums outside the realm of gaming, such as movies, cartoons and even cereal. He is quite likely the most popular video game character ever, with titles bearing his name coming out several times a year.
From Mario came a strong cast of characters, such as his taller, green wearing brother named Luigi, and his love interest in the form of Princess Peach. His main rival is almost always the dinosaur/turtle creature, Bowser. Other notable opponents (though sometimes allies) of Mario include Wario, Donkey Kong and Baby Bowser.
Both Mario and Donkey Kong were created by legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Charles Martinet has provided Mario's voice since the ground-breaking Super Mario 64.

[edit] Origins
Mario started his life as Jump Man in Donkey Kong. When it came time to release Mario Bros. in America, Nintendo of America needed a name for the plumber. While in the middle of a brainstorming session, their landlord, an Italian named Mario, burst in, demanding something or the other. After he left, they decided that Mario would be their characters name.
[edit] Super Mario
The name used for Mario when he gets bigger by eating a Super Mushroom. He is often casually called "Super Mario" in the titles of games without Super Mushrooms, or the Super Mushroom effect, so it can get confusing. One would assume that in titles the word "super" is being used in the sense that he's great, but almost all Mario game manuals distinguish Mario and Super Mario as two separate and distinct forms of Mario. "Mario" is what he is called by default and "Super Mario" is what he is called when he's really big.
In the Mario universe the prefix super basically means big.
[edit] Trivia
- Mario was originally named Jump Man,
- Charles Martinet also does the voices of Wario, Luigi and WaLuigi.
- Mario and others are unlockable extra characters in the GameCube version of NBA Street V3 and SSX On Tour.
- Mario's last name is technically also Mario, since with Luigi, they are called the Super Mario Brothers. However, this term has only been used in the feature film and cartoon, but never anything officially made by Nintendo.
- There is a Mario and Yoshi statue on a desk in Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes.
- Princess Peach is not always the one in need of help. Jump Man had to rescue Pauline in the original Donkey Kong game, and rescues Princess Daisy in Super Mario Land.
