Mario's Time Machine is not your typical Mario game. It is, in fact, one of the handful of Mario games that did not follow the typical story line of the Mario games, but instead had educational value. Mario's Time Machine focuses on teaching history. It was released for both the NES and SNES platforms. This game is said to be the sequel of another educational Mario game, Mario is Missing.

The fiendish Bowser is up to his old tricks again. Using the power of a time machine, Bowser has visited various past times and eras and stolen some extremely important artifacts. It's up to Mario to travel to Bowser's Castle, use his time machine, and get the stolen artifacts back to where they belong before the time line is destroyed.

Mario must read history books, solve riddles, and go back in time with the time machine (by surfing and collecting 10 Mushrooms and then entering a whirl pool) to correct the time line. After returning 15-20 artifacts, Mario can find Bowser and finish his time traveling once and for all.
