Gameplay

Mario Kart 64 is a kart racing game, where Mario series characters battle on crazy race tracks with tons of mayhem and action to see who is the top racer. Items can be used to enhance your chances of winning, bring down opponents, and just add flair to a racing game. Players can choose from 4 cups, with 4 races in each cup. The winner is character with the most points at the end of the game. The breakdown of points is 1st: 9, 2nd: 6, 3rd: 3, 4th: 1. Characters 5th through 8th receive no points for winning. Players who come in 5th and lower will lose the race - either having to retry it, or quit.

Mushroom Cup

The Mushroom Cup is the easiest cup in Mario Kart 64 - it features basic turns and minimal hazards.

Luigi's Circuit

Luigi's Circuit is the 1st race in the Mushroom Cup, and your basic starting course. There are no hazards (except going off the road) and no major turns. There is a tunnel, which players should be aware of, because it's quite small and a lot of action can happen in there. There is a balloon with an item on it, and a player can jump to reach it.

Moo Moo Farm

Moo Moo Farm is the 2nd race of the Mushroom Cup. Moo Moo Farm is another basic course a lot smaller than Luigi's Circuit. Moo Moo Farm has Monty Mole holes, in which they can pop out. You can recognize these holes as dark, round splotches on the ground. If you are hit by one, you'll be knocked in the air.

Koopa Troopa Beach

Koopa Troopa Beach is the 3rd race of the Mushroom Cup. Koopa Troopa Beach is sort of tricky for a new player, the water on the beach constantly changing, making difficulties if you go out too far. If you drown, Lakitu will drag you out on to the sand road. A series of palm trees also make weaving through them difficult. Small crabs also skitter along the shoreline, causing characters to spin out of control.

Kalimari Desert

Kalimari Desert is the 4th and last race of the Mushroom Cup. There are railroads set up along the course and 2 trains rotate around the course. These trains will knock players into the air, and cause smart players to stop at the track. The desert sands dramatically decreases your driving speed, and if you ram into a cactus, you'll be spinning in no time.
