Zelda music

The The Legend of Zelda series is a classic series of video games from Nintendo. The hero, Link, plays songs which affect people or his environment physically, emotionally, and/or magically. In fact, almost every Legend of Zelda game to date has utilized music to these ends in some manner. In his various quests, Link comes upon many instruments upon which these songs are played, and the games cannot be completed without their aid. While it may not always be required to learn every song in the game in order to beat it, it is often advantageous to the player.

A textual notation for the musical notes constituting each song is provided where applicable. The characters and represent offset from the central (fourth) octave; i.e., "C" represents middle C. Bold text represents notes which are selected by the player, if any, in order to play specific songs. Unformatted text, if any, represents the game's audial response to the player's selection.

There are certain melodies that have not been given titles in the games in which they appear. In the listings below, these songs are ordered first by the name of the instrument on which they are played. For each of these untitled tunes, the player does not choose which notes to play; rather, the instrument is preset with the tune before playing.

The Legend of Zelda

(Recorder)

In The Legend of Zelda Link plays a haunting melody on his Recorder. In the Overworld, this summons a whirlwind which can wipe out enemies, or carry Link to a dungeon entrance he's already visited (it's not random but it's tricky to control). It's also used to open one dungeon. In the Underworld, certain enemies are vulnerable to the sound of the Recorder being played.

The Adventure of Link

(Recorder)

In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, playing the Recorder will get Link past certain obstacles on the Overworld Map.
  • Notes: E, D, C#, D, E, A, E

A Link to the Past

(Flute)

Found by digging around the Haunted Grove in the Light World in A Link to the Past, the Flute bears more resemblance to an ocarina (which was corrected in its Game Boy Advance remake. Playing the Flute will summon its original owner's duck, who will fly Link to one of several spots around Hyrule at his command. The duck lives in the Light World, thus playing the flute in the Dark World will do nothing, though when Agahnim is defeated Link is able to use it and summon the duck once.

Link's Awakening

(Ocarina)

In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Link can play his red ocarina before he learns any songs, but he will only produce an flat, tuneless string of notes with no coherent melody.
  • Notes: F, Ab, B, G, F, Ab

Ballad of the Wind Fish

Once Link has the Ocarina in Link's Awakening, he can approach Marin while she's singing to learn to play the Ballad of the Wind Fish. If he plays it at the top of Mt. Tamaranch in front of the Wind Fish's egg, he will be accompanied by any Sirens' Instruments he has collected. When he has all eight, the song will cause the egg to open... It can also provoke a reaction from a certain walrus after he's been moved initially, and destroy Pols Voices.

Manbo's Mambo

If Link has an Ocarina when talks to Manbo, Child of the Sun Fish, at the foot of the Tal Tal Heights on Koholint Island, the immense icthyoid will give a performance and teach Link a crazy beat that can warp him directly to Manbo's Pond, right outside of "Crazy Tracy's Health Spa". If he plays Manbo's Mambo in a dungeon, he'll warp to its entrance.
  • Instrument: Ocarina

The Frog's Song of Soul

In the Signpost Maze on Koholint, Link meets Mamu, a famous frog performer. For 300 rupees, he can hear an unreleased single. The Frog's Song of Soul is a rousing amphibian jam which will liven up even the unliving. Link uses it to awaken the formerly deceased Flying Rooster and the turtle itself at Turtle Rock.
  • Instrument: Ocarina

Epona's Song

Taught to Link as a child by Malon in Ocarina of Time, this pastoral melody summons Link's horse Epona when played in outdoor areas she can feasibly reach. It also reminds cows of home, causing them to give forth milk if Link has an empty bottle. It is the same song that Malon sings as a child, and composes the melody of the background theme music from Lon Lon Ranch.

Saria's Song

In the Sacred Forest Meadow, Young Link in Ocarina of Time can learn a song to communicate telepathically with his best friend. It will also signal Navi that Link wants to talk to her, and cause others to think of the forest, which could be just the thing to cheer up someone in a bad mood. Its melody is based off of the background theme music from the Lost Woods.

Scarecrow's Song

In Ocarina of Time, Link meets a pair of music-loving scarecrows. If he teaches them a song of his own creation, he can play it later to summon a scarecrow in certain spots in Hyrule. He can then use his Hookshot to pull himself towards the scarecrow, granting him access to normally out-of-reach places.
  • Instrument: Fairy Ocarina, Ocarina of Time
  • Sequence: (Player's choice: 8-note sequence, not containing any existing songs from Ocarina of Time)
  • Notes: (vary)

Song of Storms

The main purpose of the Song of Storms, unsurprisingly, is to cause rain. In Ocarina of Time, Link as an adult learns this song from the organ grinder inside the Kakariko Village windmill. He says that a kid with an Ocarina once played it and caused the windmill to go out of control. Link travels back in time and fulfills this anachronistic duty (causing an ontological paradox in the process), draining the local well and allowing him access to the dungeon below, the Bottom of the Well.

Song of Time

When Link receives the Ocarina of Time in Ocarina of Time, he enters a vision in which Zelda teaches him the Song of Time. Playing this song causes blue time blocks to appear and disappear in certain spots around Hyrule. More importantly, when played in the Temple of Time on the Ocarina of Time by one who holds the three Spiritual Stones, the Song of Time opens the Door of Time. This allowed the Hero of Time to access the Master Sword in its pedestal, which acted as the gateway to the Sacred Realm for him (and others).
  • Instrument: Ocarina of Time
  • Sequence: Ocarina right, Ocarina a, Ocarina down, Ocarina right, Ocarina a, Ocarina down
  • Notes: A, D, F, A, D, F, A, C↑, B, G, F, G, A, D, C, E, D

Sun's Song

Link learns the Sun's Song in the Royal Crypt of the graveyard in Ocarina of Time. Playing this song causes the sun to rise or set very rapidly in the field, and in towns or other settings where time stands still it causes Link to instantly re-enter the area with the time set to the following noon or midnight. It can also temporarily immobilize certain enemies.
  • Instrument: Fairy Ocarina, Ocarina of Time
  • Sequence: Ocarina right, Ocarina down, Ocarina up, Ocarina right, Ocarina down, Ocarina up
  • Notes: A, F, D↑, A, F, D↑, A, C↑, D↑, E↑, F↑, G↑
These notes are the same as those in the Song of Passing. However, the player plays the first six notes of the Sun's Song, whereas the player conducts only the first three notes of the Song of Passing.

Zelda's Lullaby

In Ocarina of Time, Link learns this song from Princess Zelda's bodyguard, Impa, after his first meeting with Zelda. Thereafter, when Link sees a golden Triforce symbol, he plays Zelda's Lullaby to prove he is an official messenger of the Hyrule Royal Family. This allows him passage (often magically) to places otherwise inaccessible, summons Great Fairies in their fountains, and changes the water level in the Water Temple and Beneath the Well. Playing Zelda's Lullaby near a broken sign will cause the sign to magically repair itself (compare Song of Healing).

  • Notes: B, D↑, A; G, A B, D↑, A; B, D↑, A↑, G↑, D↑

Majora's Mask

Ballad of the Wind Fish

Ballad of the Wind Fish is also a distinctly different song from that of Link's Awakening—a hit performed by the Indigo-Go's, a Zora band from Termina's Great Bay. Link can help their manager complete a sound check of the song at the Milk Bar in Clock Town by playing his ocarina in its four different forms, with the help of shape-shifting masks. In doing so Link can come into possession of another mask.

  • Instrument: Zora Guitar [Ocarina of Time]
    • Sequence: Ocarina up, Ocarina right, Ocarina down, Ocarina a, Ocarina up, Ocarina left, Ocarina right, Ocarina down
    • Notes: D, A↓, F↓, D↓; D, B↓, A↓, F↓; D, A↓, F↓, D↓; D, B↓, A↓, F↓; G↓, Bb↓, D, G; E↓, E↓, Bb↓, Db, E; D↓, D↓, F↓, B↓, D
*Although drums do not have a single pitch (music), it is evident from the game that the Goron Drums primarily follow the set of ocarina notes (D, F, A, B, D↑) accompanied by a 2½ step lower harmonic. Thus, whenever an "A" (Ocarina right) is played, A and the lower E harmonic resound.
Cf. Ballad of the Wind Fish from Link's Awakening

Elegy of Emptiness

Sometimes, an army of one isn't enough. This spooky dirge from Ikana in Eastern Termina creates an empty shell mimicking one's bodily form—of which Link, conveniently, has four, with the aid of certain masks. He uses the creepy copies to weigh down multiple floor switches.
  • Instrument: Ocarina of Time

Epona's Song

Link is retaught this memorial tune by Romani in Majora's Mask, once he finds Epona again at Romani Ranch. Playing the tune continues to summon Link's friendly mare when he needs a ride, and also causes nearby cows to produce a excess of milk, which Link can bottle for future nourishment.

Goron Lullaby

The Goron Lullaby is a traditional Goron Drum melody Link learns from the Goron Elder and his son in Termina. It helps to lull Gorons to sleep, which comes in handy when Link has to get to the temple at Snowhead.

New Wave Bossa Nova

When Lulu's eggs hatch in Majora's Mask, the Zora tadpoles teach Link this funky guitar riff. This is useful for getting the attention of aquatic creatures who may be very helpful to would-be heroes... and it's nice to see Lulu smile. It is said to invoke singing voices and is the key factor in giving back Lulu's voice.
  • Instrument: Ocarina of Time

Oath to Order

When Link clears the first temple in Majora's Mask, the Guardian freed from Odalwa's body teaches Link the Oath to Order. Once he's defeated all the bosses and collected their remains, Link can use this song from atop the clock tower to summon the giants from the four compass directions, and thus stop the moon from crushing Clock Town - at least temporarily.

Scarecrow's Song

Just as in Hyrule, scarecrows are found here and there in the land of Termina in Majora's Mask. Link can teach these music-lovers a song of his own creation so that they may help him when he calls upon them, however they will forget the song he teaches when Link goes back in time with the Song of Time. These scarecrows are such fans of music and dance that they even are willing to dance the day or night away with Link, "in the blink of an eye!"

Song of Healing

When Link first recovers the Ocarina of Time and plays the Song of Time in Majora's Mask, the Happy Mask Salesman teaches him the Song of Healing. This allows him to magically heal the sorrows of tormented souls, particularly sealing curses and spirits into masks. It can also repair broken signs, which will magically reassemble.

Song of Soaring

In Majora's Mask, the owl Kaepora Gaebora teaches Link a song which enables him to “soar” to any owl statue as he has activated with his sword (even during a previous 3-day cycle).

Song of Storms

Link relearns this song from the deceased composer Flat, who begs Link to save the soul of his brother, Sharp. When Link plays the song for Sharp in the spring water cave, the evil in Sharp's accursed soul is washed away. Sharp finds peace, and the spring which feeds the stream in Ikana starts to flow again.

Song of Time

When Link recovers the Ocarina of Time from the masked Skull Kid in Majora's Mask, he falls into a memory of Princess Zelda, in which she bade Link a sad farewell by once more playing the Song of Time for him. Returning from his reverie, at Tatl's urging, he plays the Song of Time on the Ocarina of Time, which allows him to return to the Dawn of the First Day (and save game progress). He keeps key items including weapons and masks (and regains lost ones), but his stock of bombs, arrows, etc. is depleted, as is his wallet, and his deeds are undone.

Song of Double Time

By doubling-up the notes of the Song of Time, Link can proceed to the following dawn or dusk without waiting for the time to pass normally (this is not possible during the final 12 hours of a time loop).
  • Instrument: Ocarina of Time
  • Sequence: Ocarina right, Ocarina right, Ocarina a, Ocarina a, Ocarina down, Ocarina down,

Inverted Song of Time

By reversing the notes of the Song of Time, Link can slow time down. This gives the player more real time to complete tasks (two real seconds to a Termina minute, instead of one), and causes NPCs with set schedules to move slower. Playing the song again reverts the time flow to the original speed.

Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons

(Dimitri's Flute)

Link can play Dimitri's Flute to summon Dimitri, a red Dodongo who is always up for some chow and can swim well in rapid water, even up waterfalls! Link can ride Dimitri to traverse certain areas in Labrynna or Holodrum. In Oracle of Ages, his flute is obtained by first purchasing a Strange Flute at the shop in Lynna City. In Oracle of Seasons, dancing at the Subrosian Dance Hall will win him a Strange Flute that will later become Dimitri's.

(Moosh's Flute)

Link can play Moosh's Flute to summon Moosh, a blue, winged polar bear that can fly over large pits and pound the ground from the sky. Link can ride Moosh to traverse certain areas in Labrynna or Holodrum. In Oracle of Ages, his flute is received if the player travels directly to Nunn Highlands after obtaining the third Essence, without first receiving a Strange Flute. In Oracle of Seasons, the Strange Flute available at the Horon Village Shop can become Moosh's Flute if purchased.
  • Notes: Eb↑, Bb, Bb↑, G↑, Eb↑, C↑↑, Bb↑

(Ricky's Flute)

Link can play Ricky's Flute to summon Ricky, a friendly kangaroo who loves to box and can even create whirlwinds from his punches. Link can ride in Ricky's pouch to traverse certain areas in Labrynna or Holodrum. In Oracle of Ages, if Link tries his hand at the Shooting Gallery in Lynna Village (in the past), he will receive a Strange Flute which will later become Ricky's. In Oracle of Seasons, Link will get Ricky's Flute if he does not receive a Strange Flute before they meet.
  • Notes: C, F, G, C↑, Bb, C↑, Bb, A, F, A, C

(Strange Flute)

In the Oracle series games, Link may receive a Strange Flute, based on his actions in the game. It plays a generic song that "just echoes" until you find one of three animal partners to which the flute becomes associated.
  • Notes: G↑↑, A↑↑, B↑↑, C↑↑↑, D↑↑↑

Tune of Ages

In Oracle of Ages, this is the last tune Link learns. Unleashing the full power of the Harp of Ages, the Tune of Ages allows Link to move directly between ages from any spot he chooses.

Ballad of Gales

When Link finds and defeats Cyclos in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, he will learn to conduct the cranky deity's Ballad of Gales. From anywhere on the open sea, Link can summon cyclones which will transport him to key locations in the Great Sea. This is the only way to get inside the larger of the Mother & Child Isles and meet the Fairy Queen.

Song of Passing

In The Wind Waker, Link learns to conduct the Song of Passing by observing the dancer Tott on Windfall Island. Conducting this song causes time on the open sea to rapidly progress to the next nightfall or daybreak. On major islands where time stands still, it will instantly cause Link's personal timeframe to “fast forward” to the next noon or midnight on the island.

Wind God's Aria

In The Wind Waker, the fallen Kokiri Wind Sage, Fado, teaches Link to conduct the Wind God's Aria. When Link conducts Makar playing this song on his violin, Makar awakens to his destiny as the new Wind Sage. Link conducts him again to destroy certain barriers so they can get through the Wind Temple. Playing this song near broken signs will also cause them to magically reassemble.

The Minish Cap

(Ocarina of Wind)

Twilight Princess

At certain points in the game, Wolf Link has the ability to howl in three different pitches. In order to learn special sword maneuvers, Link (in wolf form) must visit six special Howling Stones and howl a song as noted above. Though the songs are not identified by title in the game, all are familiar tunes from other games. They are the Song of Healing (Majora's Mask), Requiem of Spirit (Ocarina of Time), Prelude of Light (Ocarina of Time), two arguably unfamiliar songs, and the Twilight Princess Hyrule Field theme (Link howls the bass line rather than the melody).

Epona's Song

In Twilight Princess, Link can pick a plant referred to as "horse grass", which he can use to play Epona's Song to summon his horse, Epona. As a wolf, he can also howl the song, but only at the Horse Grass. Later in the game, Ilia gives Link the Horse Call, which he can use to call Epona without the use of Horse Grass. Like the Horse Grass, the Horse Call is shaped like a horseshoe.

Hawk's Song

Link can also pick another plant known as "Hawk Grass", which, when played, summons a hawk that can be released at targets. When Wolf Link howls this song in front of the hawk grass, the hawk will swoop down to tell Link about a hidden item in the area.

Zelda's Lullaby

Howling Zelda's Lullaby at a uniquely-designed Howling Stone (marked with the Triforce symbol) in the Sacred Grove is used to gain access to the Master Sword, as well as the Temple of Time dungeon. Zelda's Lullaby also plays during various encounters with Princess Zelda, and is also integrated into the Twilight Princess title screen theme.

Serenade of Water

In addition, the Serenade of Water (from Ocarina of Time) makes a return in the background music that plays during Link's encounter with the ghost of Queen Rutela of the Zoras, but it is not a song he can actually play. The Twilight Princess version contains two extra lines after the original first two of Ocarina of Time.

Saria's Song

The background music of the Sacred Grove is the same as that of the Lost Woods in Ocarina of Time, a melody called Saria's Song. The Skull Kid in the forest also plays this in the same area when Link is chasing him and it can be used as a guide to find him, similar to the Lost Woods mazelike passage to the Sacred Forest Meadow in Ocarina of Time when Link follows the melody to find Saria there. When Link is near him, the Skull Kid's horn becomes audible over the background music.

Song of Time

This is the exact same version of the song as heard in Ocarina of Time. It can be heard before entering the Temple of Time, but, like other recurring themes, Link cannot play this melody in Twilight Princess.
