Massively multi-player online first-person shooter video games (MMOFPS) are a sub-category of the massively multiplayer online video games (MMO) video game genre, which combines first-person shooter-style gameplay with the game design elements that typify the MMO genre; namely, a persistent world populated by a large number of concurrent players, and in-depth player character progression mechanics. Whereas most MMOGs typically feature relatively slow-paced, "turn-based" combat, an MMOFPS requires a high degree of hand-eye coordination and twitch-based skills.
MMOFPS development is dilatory due to the many variables involved with the genre. Compromising balance between financial support, bandwidth and the demanding framerates needed by the genre cap off developmental progress, particularly with independent developers.
