Modes refers specifically to a standard set of methods by which a video or computer game may be played. It usually refers to the number of players who can enter a play session, but may also stipulate the types of gameplay allowed by a certain game.
A standard set of definitions is used on the Encyclopedia Gamia. They are as follows:
[edit] 1-2 Player Modes
These are gameplay modes usually used by older games, prior to large-scale use of the Internet and/or networked games, since many of those games could not support more than 2 players, though some were specially designed to support more. They are intrinsically linked to the number of players allowed, and the type of gameplay allowed between those players.
- Single player
- 2-player alternating
- 2-player simultaneous (cooperative)
- 2-player simultaneous (adversarial)
- 2-player simultaneous (mixed)
[edit] "Multiplayer" modes
These gameplay modes exist primarily because of the advent of networked games, and often support a large and variable number of players. They are commonly based on a client-server architechture, and often use the Internet for connectivity.
[edit] Notes
Modes can and often do cross from one type of game to another, and often multiple modes are possible within a single game's capabilities.
