The Nintendo 64 was a 64 bit system launched by Nintendo in 1996 (June 23 in Japan, September 29 in the United States, March 1, 1997 in Europe, and September 1, 1997 in France) Originally dubbed "Project Reality" and then "Ultra 64" Nintendo stunned the world in 1995 when they announced that they would be foregoing the new CD format, but instead opting to stick to the more traditional cartridge format. This was a big deal, as around that time it was believed that CD's were the future of gaming. Nintendo's official reasoning for this was to eliminate the load times found in other systems that used the CD format. A fifth-generation console.
