Nero is first introduced in Devil May Cry 4, of which he is the main character. He is a 'Holy Knight' of the Order of the Sword, a religious sect that worships the dark knight Sparda for driving back the demon invasion two thousand years ago, the Holy Knights is a special division of warriors charged with exterminating demons. Nero was a human orphan who was taken in by Credo, supreme general of the Holy Knights, and Credo's sister Kyrie, Nero's love interest. Nero's skill in combat has earned him the respect of his peers; however his sardonic attitude means he does not work well with others and is often sent on solo missions to carry out the Order's dirty work.
Nero resembles Dante and Vergil, with white hair, pale blue eyes and a dark blue overcoat. It is said several times throughout the game that Nero carries the blood of the Sparda, but this is never properly explained.
Nero wields two weapons: The 'Red Queen', a large decorated single-edged blade constructed by the Order but heavily customised by Nero and now contains a fuel-injected system that can be revved up via a motorcycle like handle and then releases waves of fire as it slashes. Second is 'Blue Rose', a large revolver with a distinctive under-and-over double barrel.
But Nero also bears a demonic red and blue glowing right arm called the 'Devil Bringer'. Before the events of DMC4 begin, during a suspicious demon attack on the castle-town Fortuna (the base of the Order of the Sword) Nero received an injury to his right shoulder which was somehow infected with demonic energy and as a result, his entire arm was transformed. Using the Devil Bringer Nero can summon a much larger otherwise identical hand of blue demonic energy and grab his opponents to perform powerful throws and attacks. At first he tries to hide this from others.
Nero is initially unaware of the Order's dark intentions and so when the chief priest of the Order, Sanctus or more commonly "his holiness", is assassinated by Dante, Nero assumes Dante a villain and engages him in combat. He wins this round although Dante did not fight to his full extent and instead flees after recovering from Nero impaling him with his own sword Rebellion. Nero is the ordered by Credo to track Dante down and bring him back. While attempting this mission Nero encounters and defeats multiple demons, absorbs new powers into his Devil Bringer arm, and learns of the truth behind the Order and their evil plot. Nero also receives and restores the broken Yamato, the sword of Dante's now dead twin brother Vergil. Acquiring this triggers a demonic response in Nero's Devil Bringer and grants him a devil trigger during which the glowing blue spirit of Vergil in devil trigger form appears above him holding Yamato.
Playing as Nero is similar to using Vergil in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition in that he only has one style: Devil Bringer. But unlike Vergil, Nero only has one melee weapon, the Red Queen, and one gun, Blue rose. Pressing the style button uses the Devil Bringer which can grab onto enemies and throw them. The Devil Bringer performs unique throws on most different types of enemies and they can be altered to become more powerful when devil trigger is active.
Out of the twenty missions available in DMC4, Nero is used for the first 11, and then Dante takes over mission 12 to 18 to awaken Nero from his submission at the hands of Sanctus and Nero is used once again for the final two missions.
By the end of the story Nero and Dante have reached a mutual friendship and Dante entrusts Yamato to Nero.
