Ness is the primary protagonist of "Mother 2" (Japan) or "EarthBound" (United States). He is a young boy from Onett, charged with the protection of the Earth from Giygas and his group of extraterestrial invaders. In combat, Ness uses a baseball bat and psychic attacks. His friends and allies in battle are Paula, Poo and Jeff Andonuts.
Ness' name is a play on the Nintendo Entertainment System. In the original Mother (Not officially released outside of Japan) for the NES, the main character was a boy named "Ninten", who is very similar to Ness. It can be assumed that Mother 2/Earthbound is a different, easier version of Mother, and that Ness & Ninten are basically the same, even though there are big differences between both games & characters.
Ness is also a playable character in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee.
[edit] Super Smash Bros.
In the original Super Smash Bros. game for the Nintendo 64, Ness was unlockable by beating the single player campaign on "Normal" difficulty with 3 lives and no continues. Here, he was one of the better characters in the game, mostly because of his strong Yo-Yo attacks and high priority throwing moves. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Ness is available from the beginning, but has been severely nerfed. His strongest attacks were weaker or slower to the disapproval of his fans. Ness returns in the third installment, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, once again as an unlockable character, though he is present in the opening sequence of the game.
[edit] Basic Moves
| B | PK Flash: Ness becomes stationary, but you can slowly maneuver a green flash he creates. This will soon explode for high damage. |
| B+Forward | PK Fire: Here, he shoots out a little bolt from his fingers. If it hits the opponent, the opponent will be caught in a small pillar of fire. |
| B+Down | PK Magnet: Ness forms a shield similar to Fox's Shine Reflector. It will absorb energy projectiles, turning them into health. |
| B+Up | PK Thunder: Like PK Flash, but weaker and faster moving. If you hit Ness with it, it will rocket Ness in the direction you hit him, causing damage to anyone in his way. Works as a triple jump. |
