Pong is one of the most famous video games of all time, Pong is a simple 2 player game that started in the arcades. Contrary to popular belief, it was not the first video game created, though it was the first video game to receive global success in arcades and home consoles.
Although it's debatable who first came up with Pong, the Atari game was created by Al Alcorn and Nolan Bushnell. They tested a Pong arcade machine in a small bar and found that it was a resounding success. However, the concept of Pong was created and patented by Ralph Baer over at Magnavox years earlier, and Magnavox soon sued Atari.
After Atari had paid up, Al Alcorn created a home console version of Pong. Sears became the exclusive distributor of Pong, and sold copious amounts of units that holiday season. From there, Pong's place in video game history was cemented.
[edit] Gameplay
The game is a simulation of tennis. One player controls a left paddle, the other controls a right paddle. Using your controller (Originally a dial, but has changed through each version), you and your opponent move the paddle up or down.
If you let the ball go past your paddle, your opponent gets a point. If you hit it past them, you get a point. Most points win. The points are shown at the top of the field in simple black & white.
