Sandbox is a type of game mechanic that is very non-linear and lets players do whatever they want. It is a term that developers use to describe their game, although some prefer to call it Playground instead.

The idea behind the term is that there's you, here's the sand, now do whatever you want with it. Sandbox games are often only limited by your imagination, or what you could find to do with the materials given to you.
