World War 2: Time of Wrath is a turn-based strategy game, developed by Wastelands Interactive. Players can become a leader of any European country as well as the USA and USSR of the Second World War era. He/She may also lead any number of those countries at the same time. The game has a simplified economic system and focuses on military operations on land on a strategic scale.

Gameplay

The economic system is about collecting production points (PP) from cities, factories and mines and supporting military units with them. Collected PP may be used for military build up, researching new technologies and developing the infrastructure.

There is naval units management in the game. It is based on combining groups of ships into fleets and sending them to water regions where they fight with enemy fleets. There are four fighting groups of ships: patrol group, battle group, carrier group and submarine group, in addition there is a transport group for shipping land units, although it doesn’t have any practical battle value.

There are three main alliances in the game: Allies, Axis and Communist Countries. Most of the minor neutral countries are already on the way to joining one of the major alliance at the start of the game. It is only a matter of time when this will happen and it might be hasten or slowed through various diplomatic actions.

In military operations on land a player have four types of land units and two types of planes at his/her disposal. Land units come in two sizes: division and corps, there are four types of units: infantry, paratroopers (only division size), motorized infantry and tanks. Every land unit is characterized by two main attributes: strength and movement range. Strength depends on many parameters, among others on size of the unit, its technological level, supply, political, terrain and weather modifiers or great historical leaders. Land units may perform coordinated attacks greatly enhancing attackers strength.

Air units are represented by three types of aircrafts: fighters, bombers and strategic bombers. Fighter are to gain air superiority, while bombers support land units through tactical bombing. Strategic bombers are used for destroying economy through bombing cities and also, as bombers, can attack naval units.

Plot

The game is set during the Second World War, since 1939 to 1948 in the main scenario. The rest of the scenarios focuses on shorter periods of time. The beginning of every scenario is based on actual historical events of that time. The layout of units as well as political situation. From that moment a player may try to mirror the history or create his own. The references to history are made through a system of events. This system shows events based on historical facts and introduces their effects into the game (e.g. the gradual increase in economic efficiency of the USA).
