The first game in the Sonic series, starring the new Sega mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog (character).

The game Sonic the Hedgehog was a fast paced side-scrolling platformer designed to steal the spotlight from it's rival, Mario. While Mario was a fat, slow plumber, Sonic was a cool blue spikey haired character that fought robots. Through it's refreshing & new gameplay and impressive graphical ability, Sonic the Hedgehog established the Sega Genesis as a rival console and Sonic as the Anti-Mario. The game is featured on the Wii's Virtual Console, and will be on Xbox 360's Live Arcade with various enhancements.

[edit] Story

The Chaos Emeralds have been stolen by the evil Dr. Robotnik (who was known as Dr. Eggman in Japan, a name he's taken in the US in more recent games)! Oh no! Not only that, but Dr. Robotnik has hand selected all the cute animals, and imprisoned them into killer (but colorful) robots called Badniks. It's up to Sonic the Hedgehog to race through levels, destroy the Badniks to free the animals, gather Rings, and if there's time, retrieve all six Chaos Emeralds.

[edit] Gameplay

To any gamer whos only played standard Super Mario Bros. like platformers, Sonic the Hedgehog was a familiar yet unique experience. As Sonic, you gather Rings instead of Coins, and open up TVs instead of boxes with question marks on them. To defeat enemies, you either jump on them (Sonic rolls up into a ball when jumping), or roll into them. A destroyed enemy/badnik will make a little animal come out, who will then hop away happily.

Sonic can take about 2 hits like Mario, but with a twist. When he gets hit, he loses all of his rings. His rings will shoot out in every direction and bounce around for a couple seconds before vaporizing into thin air. If Sonic gets hit again when he has 0 rings, he dies. However, if he manages to pick up at least one ring that flew out of him, or any other nearby rings, he can hang on a little longer. The more rings you have, the easier it is to recover some. Rings also serve another purpose: Opening bonus stages and getting an extra life. Fifty rings gets you a bonus stage at the end (Where you retrive the optional Chaos Emeralds) and 100 will get you an extra life.

One of the most significant, unique, parts of the game is in the level design. It takes advantage of Sonic's sense of speed, giving long areas for running, and impressive loops, swirls, and springs for Sonic to go through. Some levels could be done in an awe inspiring short amount of time.

[edit] Zones

A "Zone" is the term used in the Sonic series for the overall level, similar to Worlds in Super Mario Bros. Each zone has a different theme and setting, and contains 3 "acts" or levels, Except for the Final Zone, with only one. At the end of every final Act, you face a boss, usually Robotnik in some new machine, except for Scrap Brain Zone.

  • Green Hill Zone
  • Marble Zone
  • Spring Yard Zone
  • Labyrinth Zone
  • Scrap Brain Zone
  • Final Zone
