The Source Engine is the name of the game engine that runs Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike Source and Day of Defeat Source, among others. The engine boasts a modular design that allows for easy plug in of third party resources such as the Havok physics engine, high-dynamic range lighting (demonstrated in Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast), and multiple other features.
