Starbound is an indie action and adventure game, with gameplay inspired by both Terraria and Minecraft.

Gameplay

The following is taken from Chucklefish

In Starbound, you take on the role of a character who’s just fled from their home planet, only to crash-land on another. From there you’ll embark on a quest to survive, discover, explore and fight your way across an infinite universe.

You’ll encounter procedurally generated creatures and weapons, discover populated villages and abandoned temples. Explore planets dotted with dungeons, eyeball trees and treasure. Make use of over a hundred materials and over one thousand in-game objects to build a sprawling modern metropolis or a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, and do all of it alone or with friends!

Starbound lets you live out your own story of space exploration, discovery and adventure. Settle down and farm the land, hop from planet to planet claiming resources, or make regular visits to populated settlements, taking on jobs and earning a living. NPCs are scattered about the worlds, offering quests and challenges for those looking for a little extra excitement in their lives.

Current status of the game

As this is an early access title, customers who purchase the game should not expect the game to be in any way feature-complete. The game initially met with positive reactions, with many praising it's ambitious design, and scope for future community involvement. However, now that the game has been available in the public sphere, many issues have come to light concerning the direction the game is headed, and the attitude of the developers with respect to both the game, and the public at large. There are widespread reports of censoring on both Chucklefish's main forums, and on the official Steam forums for the game, where players who discuss problems with the game are either removed, belittled, or both. This is in addition to the game itself being likened to very excessive grinding for the reward involved, slow updates to the client, and a glaring inaccuracy with the game being labelled as a 'sandbox game', due to to the game's very linear progression path.
