Super Mario Land launched with Tetris on the original Game Boy in 1989. The gameplay was very similar to that of Super Mario Bros., though the locations, enemies, and certain piloting subgames were new additions. Starring Mario, you were charged with saving Princess Daisy from an evil space pirate, an adventure which took place through ruins, underwater in a submarine, in the skies with a fighter plane, through caves and a strange China themed world. Enemies were almost entirely different, excepting the recurrance of the Goomba and the Koopa Troopa, the later of which mysteriously turned into a bomb after being jumped on that would explode moments later, instead of allowing the player to kick their shell as a weapon.
