Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. series is a series of offbeat fighting video games . The games have been known for their all-star cast (Consisting of characters from various Nintendo franchises), their intense 4 person multiplayer, and their addictive pick up and play nature. The games are typically overseen by game designer Masahiro Sakurai.
The first game, Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64, drew attention for being the first time so many trademark Nintendo characters shared the spotlight in a single video game. Finally, we could have Pikachu fight Donkey Kong with guns and Super Star power-ups. The sequel, Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube, was a milestone for being one of the best selling games of that console generation. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the latest installment in the Smash Bros. series. It offers enhanced graphics, gameplay, and the series first use third party characters. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS became the first game in the series to be included on multiple systems (Wii U and Nintendo 3DS), each having exclusive content.
Super Smash Bros. revolutionized the way fighting games are played, employing a new system that does not follow the traditional methods of other fighing game series like Tekken and Street Fighter. Instead of players having a health bar, they have a percentage meter, which goes up every time the character takes damage. The higher percentage a character has, the farther they go flying when hit. When a character is knocked past the boundaries of a stage, they are considered "KO'd" and the person who KO'd them receives a point. After the match is over, players receive their final score: the amount of KO's minus how many times they were KO'd (TKO's) and self-destructs (SD). The winner is the character with the highest score.
Characters and stages can be unlocked be completing various challenges within the game itself, such as playing a certain amount of matches or going through a mode with a certain character.
Although absent in the first game, trophies depicting notable characters, items, and places from game series debut in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and have since become a series mainstay. In Brawl, stickers were introduced alongside trophies to provide even more series representation as well as providing customizable stats for characters.
