Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. series is a series of offbeat fighting video games . The games have been known for their all-star cast (Consisting of characters from various Nintendo franchises), their intense 4 person multiplayer, and their addictive pick up and play nature. The games are typically overseen by game designer Masahiro Sakurai.
The first game, Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64, drew attention for being the first time so many trademark Nintendo characters shared the spotlight in a single video game. Finally, we could have Pikachu fight Donkey Kong with guns and Super Star power-ups. The sequel, Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube, was a milestone for being one of the best selling games of that console generation.
[edit] Gameplay
The games in the series all shared easy to learn, yet deep, gameplay mechanics. Instead of focusing on combos and chains of buttons to press like other fighting games like Tekken and Street Fighter Alpha, the Super Smash Bros. games employed a single button coupled with a direction on the analog stick. The games also focused much more on jumping, allowing for multi-tiered & platformed stages, as the 4 players jumped all over the screen.
