[edit] Gameplay

Rush Sykes engaged in a "Deadlock"
The Last Remnant will feature a brand new battle system labeled by Hiroshi Takai (director) as a "turn-burst, command-based system using symbol encounters." There will be no random encounters. It will also contain quick time events, sequences where the player must press a combination of buttons with a correct timing to defeat enemies, similar to games such as Kingdom Hearts II and God of War.
"Lock Up"

In addition to the main character, the player's team (called a "Union") is composed of a number of soldiers whose skills vary according to different parameters. One parameter is the "morale" bar, which is affected by the events in battle and affects the way characters perform in battle. Battles can involve up to 70 enemies at once and will be at the core of the gameplay. Nobuyuki Ueda has commented on the battle system, claiming that it is "much deeper than the few seconds it received in the movie". Additionally, a high number of quests are expected.

[edit] Battle Features

Deadlock is when one of your unions comes too close to certain enemies, in which case the two unions can only battle each other until one is defeated.

Flank Attack is when one union who is deadlocked with another union is attacked by another union. The attacking union gets bonus damage and scores free hits on the flanked union.

Rear Assault is when a union is flanked by two unions and the next attacking union will launch a Rear assault. The attacking union will receive more damage than an ordinary flank.

Massive Strike is when a union is flanked by two other unions, rear assaulted by another union and the succeeding attacks will result in a massive strike, the deadliest of them all. The attacking union receive massive damage boost.

Raidlock is when a union is forced into a deadlock when they're supposed to stay put.

Interference is when an allied union battles an enemy union who is supposed to attack another union.

Intercepted is when an enemy union battles an allied union who is supposed to attack another union.

Reinforced is when enemy unions receive reinforcements.

Terminated is when an allied/enemy union is defeated in battle.

[edit] Setting

The Last Remnant is set in a fictional world featuring a number of distinct humanoid races; the Mitras, most human in appearance, the Yamas, strong fish-like people, the Qsitis, small reptilians, and the Sovannis, feline people with four arms. The story of the game revolves around "remnants", mysterious and coveted ancient artifacts of varying shapes and sizes which possess magic powers and which have been the cause of several wars throughout the game's history.

[edit] Characters

The main protagonist is an 18 year old swordsman named Rush Sykes, who is designed primarily for fans of traditional Japanese role-playing games. He is trying to rescue his 14 years old sister, Irina who is kidnapped by a mysterious man. The siblings hail from the peaceful Eulam Village, but soon Rush finds himself involved in a global conflict centering around the Remnants. Both characters were designed to appear as part of a "normal" family that is sucked accidentally into an adventure that is far from normal.

Accompanying Rush is 19 year old David Nassau, the young, authoritative Marquis of Athlum. He aims to gain independence from a nation called Celapaleis. Despite being of royalty, he joins the battlefield alongside a devastating cannon-shaped remnant called Gae Bolg. He is described as calm and collected and is known to have a deep relationship with Emma Honeywell, a 41 year old female silvery-haired general of the Athlum Army in blue schemed clothes. Aside from Emma, the Athlum Army has three non-human generals a 25 year old Yama named Blocter, the 55 year old Qsitis Pagus, and the 200 year old Torgal of the Sovanni.

Another character is an older man with long silver hair and crimson clothes, known simply as 'The Conqueror', and is designed to appeal to Western gamers. Many screen shots of him show him with blood splattered all over him which is thought, allegedly, to be the "blood of his victims". The Conqueror is a collector of remnants; he is also linked to Rush, although the nature of this link is unknown.

Yusuke Naora has stated that many main characters have yet to be revealed, some of whom will be playable.

[edit] Remnants

The story of The Last Remnant centers around the remnants themselves. In a recent trailer on the official website, Pagus states that "When a remnant is not bound to a soul, it calls forth disastrous misfortune. This calamity is known as The Collapse". In another trailer, someone, probably David, states that "From the day I was bound to a remnant, I felt nothing but hatred for the world", which implies that the remnants carry some sort of malice towards mankind.

Cyclops is a remnant sealed inside Rush's necklace. It is a giant mechanical cyclops.

Gae Bolg is David Nassau's remnant. When activated, a large cannon appears and hovers around David's right side. David then puts on a special eye patch to help him aim. He then fires and the cannon shoots a powerful energy blast that can eliminate anyone caught in it.

Valeria Heart is a gigantic sword-shaped remnant jutting from the ground in the center of Athlum, which it protects. It has the power to give courage to everyone in an area around it.

[edit] Development

The development team plans to distinguish The Last Remnant from Final Fantasy and other command based games.
