The Tony Hawk series is a hugely successful franchise of skateboarding videogames. The game is credited as not only defining the skateboard game genre, but reinvigorating the extreme sport genre as a whole. The series is considered to have had the most success, in terms of popularity & critical acclaim, around the time of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (Which received a rare 10/10 from GameSpot) and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3.
The series is considered to be fun due to the trick system, which lets players connect a series of tricks on cleverly designed levels, full of rails and ramps and half-pipes. Tony Hawk himself has had a large hand in advising how the game should feel and control. The games are also notable for the inclusion of many surprise unlockable characters, ranging from Spider-Man to Wolverine to Darth Maul.
When some felt that the series was beginning to stagnate around the 4th edition of the series, since they had been coming almost yearly, the series went in a new direction with the Underground and American Wasteland games that provided a more story-driven sandbox environment.
