[edit] Who Is This Guy?

I'm Achernar, the founder and original administrator of the Encyclopedia Gamia, which has now migrated to its permanent home at Wikia. The EG was started out of a random conversation and wild dream to create a resource to serve both fans of games and the gaming industry, something I'm happy to say Wikia is assisting greatly. I still hope to see that dream come to fruition with the further assistance of your efforts and your edits on the EG.

[edit] No, Really, Who Are You?

You'll see me in IRC chat as ryan_markel (my nick is already taken by someone), as that's my real name. I'm a software product manager and father of four residing in the St. Louis metropolitan area. I have (as near as I can tell) a near-infinite love of games in all their forms and in encouraging others to play games and to interact with others through the social mechanism of games.

I tend to be pretty easygoing and usually won't bother you if you don't bother me. I will tell you the truth almost without exception, as I don't believe in mincing words or merely telling people what they want to know in order to not ruffle feathers. I also respect and admire ingenuity and dedication.

I have serious problems balancing playing games with writing about games, in that it's very hard to find time to do both and hold down a full-time job and be a family man. So, if I submerge for a while and look like I'm not doing much of anything, it's usually because I'm busy playing a game to keep myself immersed in the medium.

How I arrived at my current occupation and set of hobbies has very little to do with my education, but I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Theological Languages from Concordia University Chicago and a Masters in Divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
