Redesigning the Wiki

Hello all! Recently I reached out Encycopedia Gamia's lead Administrator Adan Aileron about requesting a makeover for the Wiki's Main Page and Portals. Adan Aileron was supportive and gave the green light to work with Wikia staff to implement some much needed changes. As you may have noticed, this Wiki's Main Page contains a lot of old, totally unused content and has a fairly archaic design for a Wiki of this size. As for the Portals, they lack any uniformity and again contain outdated and unused features. All-in-all, it's hardly ideal for the most comprehensive source of gaming knowledge and directory of gaming Wikis on Wikia.

I'm writing this post to get some input from you, a member of Wikia's gaming community, about what you'd like see included in the redesign. Below, I'll touch on each feature and make a recommendation. Comments from you about my recommendations, or new ideas would be welcome. Keep in mind that a redesign entails significant changes to the layout and visual themes on the affected pages, so features that we keep from the current layout will appear differently.

Main Page

I'll let anyone interested tackle this for the time being.

  • Remove unused features like Featured Wiki, Community, and (at least as it exists currently) Featured Media
  • Implement a more modern look and layout with more site navigation (perhaps the Nintendo Wiki could offer some clues?)
  • Keep, but visually update Template:NavTabs

  • Make the Wiki Lists 3 columns instead of 4 to eliminate Wikis which take up 2 spaces
  • Make use of the Blue Star from the Kickstarter Portal for Wikis with 100-499 Pages
  • Replace any Events/Milestones/News/Featured Content with a bloglisting unique to each Portal (like you see on the Main Page for News), which can be easily used to announce new Wikis, or major milestones and events
  • Remove the Browse/Categories sections (it seems impossible to list every sub-genre, series, or game all on the Portal, which is what these sections currently try to do) - perhaps this could be replaced with a link to a page that has such lists?
  • Include a Featured Wiki section with a monthly selection of one Wiki from the Portal - nominations/selections could be made by the Administration, or the community if anyone were interested
  • If the above recommendations are implemented, I would imagine the Portals looking somewhat like the Kickstarter Portal, with an introduction, and Featured Wiki, News, and Wiki List boxes with perhaps a two column layout for the first two boxes
  • Create a Survival-Horror Portal. Survival-Horror is a popular genre and games within it are often distinct from Action-Adventure or Shooter games
