Video games these days have grown much more advanced than back in the early days of the medium.

One of the biggest, and one of the most important, advances has been compelling stories. With E3 2012, we caught many glimpses of where the future of game storytelling is headed. Below are my seven favorite game concepts from E3. Make sure to include which ones were your favorites in the comments!

Tomb Raider

The new Tomb Raider game will reinvent the franchise with a new Lara Croft. This time, the action looks like it will play out very similar to the Uncharted series of games, which are known for having amazing plots. Only time will tell if Lara Croft will stand with the greats like Nathan Drake.

Ni No Kuni

Ni No Kuni looks like it could be one of the most unique and beautiful games ever. Studio Ghibli, famous for their stunning animated movies, is helping craft an RPG for consoles. If it is going to be anything like the movies, then this game is definitely something you will want to keep an eye on.

Assassin's Creed III

The newest game in the Assassin's Creed story, this game takes the setting of the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. With this interesting setting, we will see how the gameplay translates from rich, urban areas to the more sparse forests of the American Northeast.

Star Wars 1313

Star Wars 1313

Maybe it's just because I'm a huge Star Wars nerd, but the newest game from Lucasarts looks to be awesome. Playing as a bounty hunter in the seedy underbelly of Coruscant, players will have to use their wits, as well as vast array of gadgets and weapons, to make it out alive.

Gears of War: Judgement

Gears of War Judgment1

Gears of War: Judgement is a prequel to the original trilogy. The game will not be starring Marcus Fenix, however. It will revolve around the Kilo Squad with Cole and Baird as they get accused of treason for stealing secret COG technology.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

The Metal Gear games are known for having incredibly complex and interesting plots, and the newest installment will certainly deliver as well. Set several years after Metal Gear Solid 4, the game will star Raiden as he tries to rebuild an unknown country.

Beyond: Two Souls

From the studio that made Heavy Rain, one of the greatest storytelling games of all time, comes Beyond: Two Souls. Starring Ellen Page as Jodie, a young girl who has grown up with a ghostly spirit who follows her. Both Jodie and the ghost, Aiden, are on the run from the government, and we will just have to wait until the game ships to see how everything turns out.
