[edit] EG Maintainance

[edit] Black Out / Staying In Contact Concerns

I'm thinking just a seperate site. A board or guestbook somewhere, something free and simple only for emergency purposes. From my contact thread on the old site, it seems not everyone uses the same communications programs, so I think this would be easiest. --Evisruc 00:55, 10 September 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Can I be an Admin?

Since rarely any admins are on to moniter what is going on I want to just ask if I can be an admin?--Cs california 14:19, 4 January 2007 (PST)

How can I become an admin? There is to few people to moniter and delete the items on this site--Cs california 00:13, 5 January 2007 (PST)

[edit] The & problem

If you type anything with the & symbol it seems to change it to an % on the adress bar. Is there some way you can fix it with programming? & turns to %26, $ turns to %24, and % turns to %25. Wikipedia uses %26 for &. So command & conquer would be Command_%26_conquer. I think we can fix this problem. We should also run the AlphaBot because the stuff is outdated. Also try to contact Achernar and get yourself Bureaucrat power because he is rarely here! --Cs california 21:46, 21 January 2007 (PST)

[edit] Spammer

How do we block spamers who made an account? Do we just post a vandalism template? There was a spamer User:Bocz who added casino links to the Breath of Fire II page which I removed. I am reluctant to put a block on his page because he can put it back on mine. --Cs california 17:00, 25 October 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Vandal Warnings

Is it proper to include a statement saying, "Spamming links here will not increase your sites pagerank on Google because they are marked rel=nofollow" or whatever Adan said on the old boards? It would be nice for them to get the message, but then again, it assumes that all people who get warned are link spammers. --Evisruc 18:14, 16 March 2006 (CST)

They seem more like a spider or something. I don't think it really matters, either way, we still remove them. It really makes no difference whether they were legit vandals or spambots.--AlphaTwo 19:51, 16 March 2006 (CST)
Why were you having trouble warning that one dude? --Evisruc 13:57, 24 March 2006 (CST)
This error:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

   (SQL query hidden)

from within function "SearchMySQL4::update". MySQL returned error "1016: Can't open file: 'searchindex.MYI' (errno: 145) (localhost)".

Yes user Bocz was baned by Oddity. Someone needs to update the current events. Cs california 14:58, 1 November 2006 (PST)

[edit] Vandalism

Thanks for banning that user! Can you also clear everything marked for deletion??--Cs california 14:48, 16 January 2007 (PST)

[edit] Flyff

I don't Play this either but it s been edited again obvious vandalism. Also ban the Ultimate spiderman guy he seem to like spam raping that page. Also the site seems to be slower than before. --Cs california 08:36, 14 February 2007 (PST)

[edit] Deletion page

Please clear the deletion page. It is getting a bit full and I am certian most of the things nominated are duplicates or mistake pages I accidentally mispelled.--Cs california 10:39, 12 March 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Continous Spammer

Remeber when the Ultimate Spider-Man talk page was continously spammed? When the site was upgrading by Achernar‎ the spam stopped. So I think it is a bot spamming. Try locking the Talk:The Encyclopedia Gamia:History/w2/index.php page for a couple days and see if they stop. --Cs california 12:42, 3 April 2007 (PDT)

It may be a good idea to run the alphabot if you have time. --Cs california 03:36, 26 August 2007 (PDT)

[edit] EG Standards and Templates

[edit] Borrowing from wikipedia

I have a few simple questions about borrowing from wikipedia.

  1. Can we take the articles that are taged with Category:Move to gaming wiki on wikipedia?
  1. What if we wrote the article on wikipedia? can we copy it to egamia?

User:proto on wikipedia has been deleting gaming articles on wikipedia so I sometimes take the good ones before they are deleted.

I also made more user templates check them out here. I think these boxes will help us identify which users know information on which games.

Regards, Cs california 16:09, 3 October 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Collaborations

[edit] Current Collaborations

This needs changing but I don't know if you guys vote on it or whats happening with it. Also I am going to update the Latest site news on the front page if that is ok with you. --Cs california 02:03, 19 January 2007 (PST)

[edit] Collaboration of the Week

I want to nominate Super Smash Bros. Melee because it is a popular game and has a well written article. --Cs california 23:11, 11 October 2006 (PDT)

  • Put up the tag for nomination, and we'll see how it goes. However, IMO, while it's well written, it's missing info on what is still perhaps the biggest Gamecube game.--AlphaTwo 05:24, 1 November 2006 (PST)
  • Should we start this up again or scrap the idea? I think we have enough people. --Cs california 19:22, 30 April 2007 (PDT)
[edit] Reviving Collaborations

I am trying to bring back the Collaboration of the week. On the forums Rainbow 6 Vegas was suggested. If you have any thoughts or comments please add them to the discussion here Enjoy your time in HK!

--Cs california 10:01, 14 May 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Current Events

Current events is getting long and I don't know where older articles go. They are several months out of date.--Cs california 22:00, 9 January 2007 (PST)

I made the Applications part for the purpose of game developement information, game protection, and emulators. For example most games use SafeDisc, StarForce, and SecuROM for their protection system. So I think we should have information about it. Programs such as Photoshop is also used in developement of graphics. (no it is not a game for the mac) Every application will be in Category:Applications. I already made some pages with the template so you can get an idea of what files are in this category.

By the way there is a wii user box.
Nintendo Wii Owner

Cs california 23:32, 9 January 2007 (PST)

[edit] Game Mods

I don't know which game mods are allowed on egamia. Of course mods made by gaming companies but what about mods made by gamers such as Forgotten Hope for BF1942. I just know wikipedia began massively deleting these mods. So I am unsure what we should do about them.--Cs california 18:14, 6 November 2006 (PST)

I'd say take it. Game Modification is becoming a big enough of a thing to stand on it's own. Remember CounterStrike started as a mod. --AlphaTwo 19:51, 6 November 2006 (PST)

How about those flash games? should we have a section for all of them or just the main sites and highlight some good ones. On the modifications I dont think we should include crappy ones that are made by small clans who try to use this site to advertise. I think we should make requirements something like it has to have an website or it was previewed on AOTS so mods that last for a few months won't waste a page.--Cs california 00:52, 12 November 2006 (PST)

Also please add more to page Encyclopedia Gamia:About on section Why use Encyclopedia Gamia over other gaming Wikis?--Cs california 01:34, 12 November 2006 (PST)

[edit] Infoboxing

"Infobox" is pretty much it. "Gamedata" was an alternate infobox, created by a user who felt very strongly that the infobox should allow some customizability, such as being able to link to reviews & FAQs on various sites (see Tales of Symphonia.) However, the problem was that you had to add in all kinds of specific stuff, so it would be harder to explain to new users, and the guy who invented it eventually disappeared. So I figure he wont' mind if we didn't use his infobox anymore.--Evisruc 16:11, 31 Jan 2006 (CST)

Lock the main info box and the navigation boxes (to unregistered users). People tried to mess with them.--Cs california 01:44, 19 April 2007 (PDT)

[edit] New Master Character box!!!

I remade the character box to fit characters from all games through observing box catagories from various sites. I know it is long, but it works for many games from mario to halo to final fantasy! I hope it is not a big problem to update some of the old ones since there are so few with them. Please leave your opinions on my talk page. --Cs california 22:34, 10 October 2006 (PDT)

NEW User boxes check them out here. Tell me if any more are necessary. I am going to start making regional ones next.--Cs california 03:20, 4 May 2007 (PDT)

2 signinficant new userboxes! you can now link your wikipedia account and your Game collection! --Cs california 17:47, 17 May 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Templating

Nice job with the E3 Template. It really helps out with navigating those pages. -- Oddity 10:34, 27 Aug 2005 (CDT)

Seems kind of obtrusive because of the size, but I wouldnt' be against having it somewhere on the main page. Maybe not just front & center above everything else. It's up to everyone else, too. Secondly, we were given an "ok" of sorts to make an EG thread on the PA boards, and I was wondering if you had any ideas what it should say. I was thinking of trying to present it not as spam, but as a content drive.--Evisruc 21:43, 8 Feb 2006 (CST)

The content drive idea is good. There are a few templates and standards we want to lock down on first, I guess. Do you have a timeframe in mind?--AlphaTwo 22:19, 8 Feb 2006 (CST)

Within the next week.--Evisruc 22:41, 8 Feb 2006 (CST)

No you didn't, but yours is clearer anyway. Hmph. --Evisruc 23:40, 10 Feb 2006 (CST)

Hey Alpha, I just went on the Sony Playstation Portable page and on the line at the top that says "This is the current Collaboration of the Week. - See how it has improved (before)" I clicked on the before and it took me to the PlayStation page. --Demandred82 12:55, 26 February 2006 (CST)

Is Action rogue-like a valid category? I never played diablo but I know some of the interface but I am still unfamiliar --Cs california 01:40, 25 January 2007 (PST)

From what I've been told, it is. I'd leave it as is unless otherwise told.--AlphaTwo 05:32, 25 January 2007 (PST)

If you dont mind I am going to change some parts of the latest site news to part of current events so the site looks updated --Cs california 14:17, 31 January 2007 (PST)

[edit] Bots

[edit] Mediawikiconnection broken

Hi there! I am also using mediawikiconection and I have the same problem you have with AlphaBot. Have you discover any alternative java (or not java) code able to login and set a wikipage succesfully? Kokomo 05:16, 1 April 2007 (PDT)

[edit] documentation?

You said that mediawiki 1.9 uses cookies authentication. Where is this documented in mediawiki? May be the problem could be fixed by changing the authentication method of the org.apache.commons.httpclient java package. Although a know java a little bit, I am stuck due to the lack of documentation... Kokomo 07:17, 4 April 2007 (PDT)
I was actually trying to packet sniff and reading the http headers that are being sent out via WikiLink vs an actual HTTP post. Somehow it looked different. I really don't know what to tell you on what the problem lies. What I did was take the WikiLink's source code (it's not officially posted, but it's mine-able), and there was a function for post that it's always getting stuck in, which is the central cause of the problem.
Sorry I can't be much of help now, I found this problem a while ago, but never had time to look at it more in-depth yet because of school and stuff. Hopefully once exams are done.--AlphaTwo 22:46, 5 April 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Updated WikiLink

Hi, I recently updated wikilink (mediawikiconnection), so it should (mostly) work with everything up to Mediawiki 1.10. Bug reports welcome, to mailto:scott+wikilink@tqft.net, or back at [1] where WikiLink is hosted.

[edit] Admin Status

Congratumalations. It's well overdue, but seeing as how my work life doesn't leave a whole lot of time for this recently, and seeing as you've been one of the major contributors for the past months, you're a sysop.

Don't do anything I wouldn't do.  :)

And thanks to everyone who's been editing for trying to keep things alive - the site will remain up indefinitely so we can build people who wander past (that's my hope). Remember that if you need anything server-related or if you have any questions, my e-mail is always open at achernar@strategema.net. --Achernar 21:20, 31 Jan 2006 (CST)

Congratulations! A Sysop is You!--Evisruc 23:24, 31 Jan 2006 (CST)

Just wanted to say, thanks for all the recent work you've been putting into the site, knowing how busy club-running can be.--Evisruc 23:16, 7 Feb 2006 (CST)

[edit] Misc.

Ok. I've just been doing it to pad out articles. -- Jfarer

I'll definitely delete all of those soon, but there's a couple (1-4 players alternating) that really can't have much more written about them, so instead maybe I'll try and add a little more content. If, after that, you still find that those pages are useless, then I'll go through & delete them. --Evisruc 11:48, 27 Jan 2006 (CST)

Sorry to hear they blocked Penny Arcade. My work uses a program called Smart Filter to block websites. The company creates an index of blocked sites and puts them preset categories that I believe the buisness can turn on and off. I've been worried the day may come where PA or EG gets blocked. It took them only three days to block google pages after I heard about it.... --Porphyria Plan 09:17, 6 March 2006 (CST)

PA got blocked because of it's indexes with keywords like Gaming. Either way, it's only a co-op term, so it won't matter much. And by May, I should be back at the school filling this place up again on a more regular basis if they ever get around blocking EG.--AlphaTwo 09:24, 6 March 2006 (CST)

Just curious, have you ever gone by just 'A2'? I ask because in my Planetarion days so many years ago I played with a tech-oriented guy by that name. -- Scooter

Nope. The only other one I might go by is "Alpha", but that's rare and generic enough that no one will know. :P --AlphaTwo 09:23, 19 March 2006 (CST)

[edit] Final Fantasy, and other shameful secrets

You know nothing about the Final Fantasy games? I can't imagine that even if someone dislikes the series. So tell us your life story of the boy raised by wolves. :P --Porphyria Plan 10:24, 23 February 2006 (CST)

This story probably belongs in one of those "What is your gaming secret?" threads ever so popular in gaming boards. Let's put it this way, my exposure to RPGs are limited at best, and the first "RPG" is Super Mario RPG. My genre of choice back in my "youth"? Platform and Racing. You name any big RPG franchise, I would probably know squat about it. Only within the last few years have I actually gotten into a few RPGs (Orge Battle 64, Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia; most of which aren't strict Turn Based RPGs either.)
Eventually I will get into the entire Final Fantasy series, but for now, I just sit idle on the sidelines until I have nothing better to do.--AlphaTwo 10:44, 23 February 2006 (CST)
Very interesting. I knew there had to be a story behind it. I'm quite surprised you went so long without much exposure. I wont bore you now by telling you all the "great rpgs" to play. I'm sure you've heard it all 1,000 times over. I've never played ToS or SoA but from reading about them at PA and here I want to. --Porphyria Plan 11:24, 23 February 2006 (CST)
Good news. I finished Final Fantasy I (my first FF) with Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls--AlphaTwo 12:32, 28 September 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Ban user

Please ban user 209.160.72.47 for vandalism on page Talk:2006/February --Cs california 14:11, 23 January 2007 (PST)

It's not that simple, but they now get a week off.--AlphaTwo 15:44, 23 January 2007 (PST)
I see, Also if you can add more current events they seem to attract viewers. --Cs california 15:58, 23 January 2007 (PST)

-And again there is an spammer Talk:Tetris/. Sorry about filling your page with messages about spammers :( --Cs california 22:51, 23 January 2007 (PST)

[edit] Video playback

Look at the Ucyclopedia PS3 page [2]. How do they put up the videos playable from their site? and we cant?--Cs california 19:56, 11 February 2007 (PST)

Looks like they've modified their parser. It's not somethign that I can get a hold of, or would recommend trying to do.

[edit] Spam needing deleted

You missed 1960s, Talk:The Encyclopedia Gamia:History/w2/index.php and Talk:The Encyclopedia Gamia:History/w2/index.php?title=Talk:The Encyclopedia Gamia:History/ when you deleted all the spam and stuff. --DanMP5 | contribs 15:09, 28 March 2007 (PDT)

Ban IP 200.238.102.170 for vandalism here --Cs california 22:43, 10 April 2007 (PDT)

[edit] popup.js

I answered your question about popups on my talk page. I also have a question there too.--DanMP5 | contribs 14:38, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

I found the problem, You or another admin will have to insert " $wgAllowUserJs = true; " into the LocalSettings.php file. This should make popups work (also WikED will work).--DanMP5 | contribs 05:54, 12 April 2007 (PDT)

[edit] WikiLink

Hi AlphaTwo,

I'm Scott Morrison, from http://katlas.math.toronto.edu/wiki and http://tqft.net/. I'm the original author of the java WikiLink package for mediawiki. I just noticed your comment pointing out that the setPageText function is broken when connecting to MediaWiki 1.9.*.

Do you know what's causing this? I'd be happy to fix it if you can help, but I don't have too much time for this at the moment. I can also give you SVN access to the source code, if you'd like to tweak it yourself!

Scott --207.154.101.164 15:59, 28 May 2007 (PDT)

Hi AlphaTwho. Did you contact with Scott? Any news about wikilink? did you find any alternative code that can set to a wiki? I still cannot find something that can easily substitute wikilink java api. Kokomo 02:54, 3 July 2007 (PDT)

[edit] New Userboxes

When your back be sure to get the new user boxes. I made one that can link to your game collection page

--Cs california 21:45, 30 May 2007 (PDT)

Had some free time :) By the way, It is great when you upload pictures that are high quality because I don't have to go find them. --Cs california 20:35, 20 June 2007 (PDT)

Congrats on the Job at Koei --Cs california 01:20, 25 June 2007 (PDT)
Just moved it here: Encyclopedia Gamia:Userbox because it comes up in the search. It is also attached on the help section and the help template box. --Cs california 20:14, 4 July 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Wikia move

The few days you were gone the wiki was merged with GameInfo at wikia. Achernar just moved it today and was discussing with wikia staff to combine the sites. We still will attain our admin status but we have new wikia features. Our articles also have priority over theirs. The & problem is also fix. --Cs california 05:07, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Merge with CheatBase

PatPeter has asked if Cheat Base Wiki on wikia should be merged with The encyclopedia gamia. Please cast your vote here so we can decide what to do --Cs california 09:07, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] We have forums!(well sort of)

Forums setup help me test and make fixes here:Forum:Index please also read this to see how I got it and what to do! Also please restructure I have been busy all day is tired please test! Also see http://egamia.wikia.com/forum/ --Cs california 10:00, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Reactivate bot

If you have time please recreate the alphabot and run it. Also I want to know how the bot was coded and how it works if possible. Anything coming out for 2008 from Koei Canada? --Cs california 14:20, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

  • The Bot has been pretty DOA for a while. If you've scanned through the WikiLink stuff, you may see what's going on. It's a Java interface, and I've been too tied up to really trace through the HTTP responses to figure out why it's not working. Ideally, we should look at a python based scripting solution. I'll leave you with more details later.

As for upcoming stuff - Can't talk. :P--AlphaTwo 23:08, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Have you retired this bot? If so I'd like to request it's bot flag removed. --Charitwo (talk) 17:29, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

  • OK. I haven't had time to work on it yet. Please do deactivate it. I will request for activation when the time comes.--AlphaTwo 19:08, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Things to bring me back up to speed

No not much just eliminating dates. If you want b-crat access add your name. --Cs california 05:37, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

No I see the same thing. I can't find the html/css tag to fix it though.--Cs california 09:33, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Just a 'lil sorry note...

I'd just like to say, that I'm sorry for the inapropriate edit on the talk page, as my sister was being immature and saying stupid things like "i am cool lol talk to me for info" and stuff. Anyways, to prove i'm not a vandal with no mind, check out my contributions on SmashWiki. Anyways, sorry. --~The Blue Blur~New main in training! 11:24, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Upcoming Release

Greets! I and several others over at Pathfinder Wiki are wondering how to get a game added to the Upcoming Releases box that appears on the left side of Wikia Gaming projects. The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook will be released on August 13, at Gen Con Indy, and we were hoping to get it added to the list. -- Heaven's Agent 18:51, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
