[edit] What is a Warp Zone?
Warp Zones are special places in Super Mario Bros. that lead to different Worlds. They are essentially a level skip that allow players to skip two, six or even ten different levels.
There are a total of four different Warp Zones. In World 1-2 there is the Warp Zone to Worlds 2, 3 and 4. In World 4-2, there is a Warp Zone to World 5. Also in World 4-2, there is a Warp Zone to Worlds 6, 7 and 8. And finally, in World 1-2, there is a glitch Warp Zone that takes you to the infamous Minus World (World -1.)
[edit] The Different Warp Zones and How to Get to Them
[edit] Worlds 2, 3 and 4
The first Warp Zone is in World 1-2, which warps you to Worlds 2, 3 and 4. To get to it, you have to go near the elevators near the end of the level. Jump one of the platforms going up. Then jump on to the "ceiling" and run across the blocks. You have now found the first Warp Zone.
[edit] World 5
The next Warp Zone is in World 4-2. Near the beginning of the level, where the seven ? Blocks are, jump on to the elevator. Then jump to the elevator going downward. Once again, quickly jump onto the "ceiling" and run across the blocks to get to the World 5 Warp Zone.
[edit] Worlds 6, 7 and 8
The final (and best) Warp Zone is also in World 4-2. In the same place as the last Warp Zone, jump to the second ledge. DO NOT JUMP ONTO THE CEILING. You won't be able to do this right. Now, do everything I tell you to in the exact order. Or you still won't be able to do this right. Okay, now see the three brick blocks? Get under the one to the farthest right. Jump straight up and hit the invisible block. Now, jump onto the invisible block. break the middle and the far right brick blocks. Now, jump down and go to the left of the of the first invisible block. Jump again and hit a second invisible block. Jump onto the second invisible block by jumping on the first one and then the second one. Don't jump on it the short way, because there is a third invisible block there. Now, hit the final brick block. A vine will sprout, taking you to a bonus level. at the end of the bonus level, you will find the Warp Zone to Worlds 6, 7 and 8.
[edit] The Minus World
The Minus World is a glitch Warp Zone That you can get to by doing the following. First, get to the end of World 1-2 where the exit pipe is. Jump on the pipe and smash the two blocks directly above of the lip of the pipe, but not the farthest right block (See Image: Step 1). Then have Mario get on the left edge of the pipe. You then need to jump backwards toward the block. This is the hardest part, because you're trying to go through that block (See Image: Step 2). If you get it just right, you'll get it so that Mario gets sucked through the wall and to the Warp Zone (See Image: Step 3). Don't go to far to the right or you'll get the regular "Welcome to Warp Zone" message and the glitch won't work. The two outside pipes will take you to World -1 and the middle pipe will take you to World 5 (See Image: Step 4). You have now gotten to the Minus World.
[edit] Other Info on Warp Zones
Warp Zones were also in Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels (Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan). There are actually even two backwards warps in that game! (World 1 and World 5.) An interesting approach was made in that game, because there was a different Warp for each different World.
Super Mario Bros. 3 made an even more interesting approach. Instead of actual Warp Zones, they had what were called "Warp Whistles".
