The Wii Optical Disc is a modified variant of the DVD-ROM standard. Nintendo re-engineered the existing DVD-ROM standard to avoid paying royalties to the DVD Forum, the international standards organization responsible for creating and enforcing standards for optical media.

Standard DVD-ROM discs read from the inside of the disc to the outside; Wii Optical Discs read from the outside of the disc to the inside. The Wii Optical Disc was the successor to the GameCube Game Disc, and was superseded by the Wii U Optical Disc.
