Wizard 101

From Wikia Gaming, your source for walkthroughs, games, guides, and more!

Wizard101 is a 3D Massively multiplayer online role-playing game created by KingsIsle Entertainment especially for preteens. Players take on the role of students in a fantasy academy for wizards, and battle a variety of creatures by casting spells using a turn-based combat system similar to collectible card games. Players advance in the game by accepting quests to learn new spells, gain equipment, and collect gold.

Characters in Wizard101 who are defeated in combat are sent back to the Wizard City Commons to regain health and mana. Playing mini-games helps restore mana more quickly, and may also yield gold and equipment. Opponents in combat disintegrate or vanish, and there is no bloodshed. The game has a rating from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board of Everyone 10+ for crude humor and mild fantasy violence. Although designed for pre-teens, the game appeals to adults and traditional gamers as well.

[edit] Storyline

The story of Wizard101 begins with the player creating a character. The player then takes a quiz to pick their selective school of magic (they are also given the option to choose it themselves). The schools are Fire, Ice, Storm (the elemental schools), Life, Myth, Death (the spiritual Schools), and Balance (a school based on finding a "balance" in all the schools of magic).

During the tutorial, the created character comes face to face with the main villain of the game, the previous teacher for the school of Death, Malistare Drake. Throughout the game, the main storyline involves discovering Malistare's plans, and trying to foil them.

The player visits five worlds in the game, beginning with the world that they currently are in, Wizard City. After a period of doing "quests" the player can access a second world, Krokotopia, where it is revealed that Malistaire wishes to obtain an ancient book of magic known as the "Krokonomicon" to use for unknown, but undoubtedly evil, purposes.

When the Krokonomicon is transported to another world, Marleybone, the player follows the lead. After the Krokonomicon is stolen by the master thief Meowiarty on behalf of Malistaire, the latter is spotted in the ruins of the haunted world of Dragonspyre (the latest game area, released on January 19th, 2009), and attempts to convince the Dragon Titan at its top to resurrect his wife using the Krokonomicon. While he is eventually defeated by the player, he and his wife gain peace.

The storyline, however, is not over, as there will be other worlds added to the Spiral (the universe in which the game takes place). Additionally, the staff of KingsIsle have hinted that Malistaire is not truly dead.

[edit] Game World

There are a total of 6 worlds in the game: Wizard City (The main world, where the schools of magic are located), Egyptian-inspired Krokotopia, Marleybone, a Victorian London style world populated by anthropomorphic dogs, Moo Shu, based on ancient Japan, the ruined world Dragonspyre themed on Ancient Rome, populated by the ghosts of the former civilization who stored knowledge in crystals, and Grizzleheim, based off the Vikings.

There's also been one other world mentioned in quests and quest items Celestia, which is not currently implemented. According to the spiral model in the Headmaster's Tower, there could be up to 9 worlds to be released.

[edit] Business Model

Wizard101 is available as a free download from the game’s website. Several starter areas in the game are free to play without time limit, but most areas are available only by either subscription or by purchasing individual zones, using a microtransactions system.

Players may purchase “crowns” to unlock new content and special items in the game. There also is a download for a launcher for the test set of realms, different from live used to test out new materials such as NPC's, features, and equipment.

[edit] Online Safety Features

Several features have been implemented to protect younger players in the online world. Parents must activate controls for players under 13, including setting levels for interaction with other players in the world.

Three different levels of chat are available. At the most restricted level, players select from a menu of pre-defined phrases, and players using this option can only see menu chat from other players. At the next level, players may type what they want, as long as the words are available in the game’s dictionary. If a word is not present in the dictionary, or part of a forbidden phrase, such as asking another player’s age, it will not be visible. If players know each other outside the game, they can use a true friend code to allow free chat inside the game.

Additionally, players choose names for their characters from a list that allows selection of a first name and a one- or two-part surname. Names for in-game pets must also be selected from a list. The official game forums are filtered and moderated.

Duels between players are available only in a special player versus player arena designated for the purpose, removing the possibility of player killing. Rewards for combat or completing a quest are distributed equally among the party, so players need not fight for spoils. Players may trade spell cards, but not items.
