Xbox One Backward Compatibility is the digital-based system where Xbox One owners can play select Xbox 360 games on that console. Once an Xbox 360 disc is inserted into an Xbox One, the console software will connect to Xbox Live, and download a version of that game specifically designed to run on the Xbox One.

The feature can also take advantage of Downloadable Content that the player has purchased via the Xbox Games Store. Microsoft's plan is for all Xbox 360 games to become available eventually, although this is being rolled out incrementally.
